this is not the first article about asians being the most successful immigrant group from a major publication recently. even espn did a story on something similar during the linsanity craze.
I do admire the fact that they do not rely on govt handouts.
However, i feel the oft repeated statement that they assimilate quickly with american culture is false. they have a high tendency to self-segregate.
here's an example. when I was younger, we used to have block parties every summer where I lived. we would apply for a permit to block the road off and everyone would gather outside, have food, drink beer, throw a baseball, play touch football, whatever. someone would dj, or some of the guys would bring out their guitars, set up their drum set and jam outside. good all around fun.
everyone except the asian and indian families would participate. i would see them just stare from their windows for a few minutes, and then disappear... probably went back to studying.
It really took away the sense of togetherness and community. and it happened with every asian family that moved in. they got the flyers that we stuck in their mailboxes so it's not like they weren't invited or weren't aware.
guess what... our annual tradition today is no more. it actually died off years ago due to lack of participation.
