I think they are. Maybe not as an actual physical danger but a psychological one.. I see it all the time, some 300lb person thinking it must be good for you because the label says NO sugar so they eat 5 times as much as they should. Just because a pop says "diet" doesn't mean its good for you.

I think the ones with saccrin in it are the ones people worry about. It supposedly caused cancer in lab animals, but it's not proven to hurt people.
Those studies have been reversed. Saccharin was taken off that list of stuff.
Phenylalanine is now the big worry. What is in Nutrasweet (Diet Coke, Equal, etc). Supposedly causes brain damage and loss of sight. I know that's is supposed to be really bad for babies (just from what I've read). Could end up just like saccharin though and just a scare with no real problems.
I did find a few pages claiming that aspartame is in fact dangerous, but they make the claim so loudly and based on thin evidence that I have to wonder about their agenda. Another contradiction I noticed is that these same pages claim that damage from aspartame is cumulative and yet they also say that once use is stopped, the symptoms go away. I really don't see how that's possible if damage is in fact cumulative.
Personally, I've probably consumed less than half a pound of artificial sweeteners in my entire life so I could continue to live without it, but I am curious about the situation.
