Are Antec Powersupplies LOUD?

I'm thinking of picking up a 350W Antec PSU(PP-352X) at newegg.com soon. I'm just wondering if this PSU has a loud fan in it, because if it does, I'll pay the extra money for an Enermax with manual fan control.

<edit>
Got off my lazy butt and looked up specs for this PSU. It does have a thermally controlled fan with a 3 pin fan header to monitor the RPMs. So I'm guessing this baby is quiet when there is decent case circulation?

Thanks for any responses.

I've gone through LOTS of Antec PSU's and yes, they are LOUD. I will say that of the top three in their line, the pp303x, pp352x, and pp412x, the dual fan pp352x is probably the most quiet out of the bunch. Dunno why, but it is.

Unfortunately, they don't seem as durable as the old pp303x and pp412x though. I've had a couple die on me while I've never had any problems with the others. Thankfully, Antec has a pretty good return policy and it's relatively easy to get a RMA authorization.

I bought both the enermax 350 watt whisper series from newegg and a antec 350 watt pp-352 from buy.com. I tried them both and you can't tell the difference. They are both very quiet.

I wish I knew why some people think Antec PS fan are loud. It seems that either people say they are very quiet or very loud, no in between. The explanation may lie in the fact that the fan is thermally controlled. Perhaps people who think they are loud have insufficient air flow in the case causing the fan to run at the max RPM. As I type this my case temp is 78 and my PS is running at 2250 RPM and it is quiet. Perhaps we could solve this if people would post their case temps, fan RPMs (I realize not every Antec PS has fan RPM monitoring wires) and subjective loudness (very quiet, quiet, tolerable, loud and very loud).

Here's mine: 26 C, 2250 RPM, quiet

i have an antec 300w in my wifes machine (with real crappy cooling might i add)
its silent
if it weren't for the lights on the case, i'd never know when its on

yeah, i am gonna have to say it is pretty quiet too.....not the QUIETEST.........but not really loud. a lot of people have modded their antec PS and put in quieter fans too......so if you are willing then that is an option......

?

i have the pp412x.. with the defualt fan it was just barely louder than a la1 at room temp.. i still replaced the fan with a la1 but i don't tink i twas really n ecessary.

I'd say it depends on the RPM the antec PS fan blows. My 300 watt antec PS is fairly quiet at 2240 rpm. There are probably fans quieter than it at the same rpm though but I'm not gonna change the fan since it's soldered in there.

hehe... i just cut the wire.... put in a la1 and ran the cord out the back of the ps with the other wires and pluged it into the mobo.

not temp controlled anymore, but its only 21dba.. it doens't need to be

btw i don't care if my powersupply dies sooner than it would if it had better cooling.... i'll pay $100 a year to have it this quiet.

I suspect that the Antech fans are a bit noisy in general.

I have the 1030 case with 300W ps and two 80 mm case fans extracting in rear of case.

I recently upgraded to new mobo with amd XP processor and Alpha 8045U cooler - and can't hear the 8045U above the general fan background noise of the case/ps fans.

case and Alpha cooling combo is great - haven't seen a cpu temp above 41C in any game with 148MHz FSB overclock.

I just ordered 4 80mm Panaflos to see if I can't lower the noise ($2.79 each): http://www.bgmicro.com/

Hope this helps!

My own experience is that Antec supplies, in general, are not loud at all. Not silent, either, but relatively quiet. My pp303x is no louder than my Enermax eg351p-ve, for example.

I think that sometimes people try to compare apples to oranges. They had that 200 or 235w psu for the last couple of years, and when they get a 400w model they think it's noisy. Each has a 80mm fan, but the 400w unit has to dissipate about twice as much heat at max load, so it has a more powerful(noisier)fan. And sometimes the fan controller is defective, and defaults to max rpm as a safety feature....

Power supplies could be made quieter by using components rated for higher temp operation, but few would actually want to pay for them....
