Slashdot is MUCH less user-friendly. I came from the Slashdot userbase to the AT userbase.
The main reason is their message boards are based on the particular article. On AT, the messageboards are based on the users, and are constantly changing. AT is much better than Slashdot, even though I still surf /. every day to see the latest news.
 
90,000 members is a helluva lot of members...but how many of those members do you think are active? I usually see 700-800 or so people online when I stop in which is a far cry from the 90,000 that are registered.

Also, how many lurkers do you think there are? If there's 700 online, do you there there's twice that many lurking? Half that many?

Kinda brings up a lot of questions.

I know I lurked for a good year before I finally decided to register an account and post on here. Undoubtedly there's a lot of people lurking around on these boards.
 
I really do enjoy AT and if we are not the biggest, then we are certainly the best!!! As for lurkers (BTW, I loved using those in starcraft: brood war) I bet there are tons more then active people. I "lurk" at about 8 other smaller forums for specific adivce on certain computer related topics.
 
I always throw this out there when people go "Is Anandtech bigger?"

Slashdot has a userbase TEN times the size of Anandtechs, give or take 100k.

"But a lot of them are inactive!"

A lot of users are inactive here, too.

"But they've been around forever!"

About as long as Anandtech. The registered user system was implemented either 99 or 2000, I forget.

"But what about the lurkers here?"
