Are American teens lazy?

My parent's have a summer restaurant. In the past they would hire young teenage American workers but that's a thing of the past. For the second straight year the workers at my parent's restaurant have been all foreigners. Most are from Eastern Europe and they come down primarily for the summer season.

To put it bluntly, my parents don't hire American teens anymore because of their lazy attitude. They show no initiative. They love to bitch about everything. They will sit on their lazy behinds while customers walk into the front entrance. They're always asking for weekends off. This is a big no-no in the summer because the shore resorts swell with tourist.

My parents have had ZERO issues with foreign workers. They don't complain. They will actually work when told and in fact my parents don't have to remind them because they show initiative. They are for the most part hard workers.

My parents aren't the only ones who feel this way. Most of the landscaping and construction businesses in the area hire nothing but Mexicans. A few weeks ago I had a discussion with an owner of a landscaping business and he told me that he's sick and tired of hiring young American men. They constantly call out of work and when they do show up their output is awful. Also, they bitch and moan all day.

Of course I'm generalizing. There are American teenage workers that aren't lazy and if this is you then that's great. But you also have to admit that what I just said is mostly true.

Eat my shorts, Bytch. If your cheapass parents would pay a decent wage the American kids would do the work. The same goes for the socalled "landscapers" you cite.

I worked my butt off when I was a kid, but I was paid and treated fairly.

not that that says anything...

Why pay Americans more when they can get a better attitude from someone else, and cheaper?

I'm pretty sure that even if they were paid 20 bucks an hour they'd still find ways to be as unproductive as possible without getting fired.

Thats just a cop out, people would pay the wages if they could justify paying for the decent labor.

My parents pay very nicely. $9-10 for making sandwiches is pretty damn good for an 18 year old. A waitress can easily average $110 a day in tips and this is from 11-2:30pm. And finally, my parents do give nice summer bonuses.

As for the landscapers I'm sorry to bust your bubble but it's true. I remember when landscaping had taken off in the mid 90's and most of the workers were young American men. This has changed considerably. If you were to look at the workers now you would find most are Mexicans. I wonder why this is the case? It's not just landscaping anymore. Construction companies in my area are bypassing young American men for Mexicans. I rent an apartment and my neighbor is a young American male construction worker. He's a drunk and a lazy bum in my opinion. He doesn't go to work when he should and he bounces from one job site to the next.

Of course, this is only one individual.

Thats funny, when I was 16 I worked and managed a video store until I was 20. I must have been lazy though.

Sadly, in my experience, I've found this to be the case. When I was a teenager, I worked at a resturant. I was one of the few "American teens" who worked hard there.

I have a friend who owns a landscaping business. He won't hire illegals but he's had it with the lazy teenagers even though he paid $11/hour. For the last 3-4 years he's struggled with people not showing up, quitting after a week, etc. So he closed his business and started a company that makes pallets. His former competitors have no objection to hiring illegals and paying them $5/hour under the table.

I couldn't believe he had trouble keeping people paying that kind of money.

And from my own experience, most of our new employees are right out of school (2-year degrees) and make about $13/hour plus great benefits in an office job. I've had people not show up (and not call in) and their opinion was that since they didn't get paid when they didn't work, what was the problem? Trying to get them to understand that we were counting on them to show up on time every day didn't always work, and I had to let some of them go. The most reliable employees I've had were kids who grew up poor and women who are returning to work after their kids get into middle school. The majority, I'm sorry to say, are lazy, steal, and have to be watched.

The irony is that about half of the ones I've let go have called me a year or two later asking for another chance, when they find out jobs like these aren't that easy to find.

In general, I'm in agreement with the OP.

I am only 16 years old, but for the last 4 summers I've worked labor jobs (i.e. painting, plumbing, electrical and various other type of construction type jobs.) from 8am-5pm every dayand even sometimes on weekends, from the day after school gets out to the day before school starts. Even after that I will often work those same hours on ~week long breaks and on weekends. I will agree with you though that there are many a lazy teen, but from my understanding people have been saying that for generations. It just depends on who you know and where you live.

(Please pardon any spelling errors as I am terribly tired as of late.)

EDIT: I worked for a consistant $7 a hour every summer.

I think many will object to what the OP is saying, but this is largely due to the background of the MAJORITY of those groups, at least what we see of them. It will be interesting to see how their kids turn out.

I have a friend who ran a pretty successful landscaping business the past few years, he would pay his workers based on how many yards of mulch they put down, allowing them to get $18/hour if they didn't waste their time.

Its so sad, but very true. I myself am a very lazy person when it comes to homework and finishing things, however, When I worked at my job i did everything as fast and proper as i could. I am not poor(far from it) and i worked harder than anyone else at the job. I was one of the few people at my school that had a job because a lot of the people are too lazy to work or too spoiled. If parents made their 12 year and older kids start paying for their ipods/cellphones/video games they would be forced to work and see how hard it is to earn the money to get them. The future of america is looking bad......

hmm have to agree to a point.

my wife's sisters are some of the lazyest people i have ever seen. they refuse to pick anything up that is not thers. the 2 older can not hold a job. they expect everything to be handed to them. all they do is sit around and watch TV. one is 12 and fat. if she would lose a little she would be a beutiful young lady. only thing she has going for her is she is very smart.

when i was growing me and all my friends worked as teens. when we were not working we would be out rideing bikes or playing something.

but then we also did not get cable TV until i was 12. Even then my mother would not let us watch more then an hour or two a day. If we didnt have chores or homework we were to be out playing.

The family across the street from me are great. The kids (all 6 of them) are always out side. The 2 eldest boys (15, 16) are some of the nicest most responsible teens i have seen. When i hurt my back over the summer they took turns mowing my lawn for me without being asked to or excepting pay!

Whenever i need a hand with something they will do it. They also do side work with there father (construction etc) on weekends and the summer.

That's why American jobs are being outsourced.

People have reached the conclusion that you can pay less and hire a smarter, more motivated worker overseas. A win-win situation.

What goes up must come down.

Long suffering immigrants built America....and their grandchildren will bring it down a tier with their laziness and sense of MTV "Cribs" entitlement.

To fall is the way of things. Look at Rome....

I must say that I am 21 and am not - was not that way at all.

For three summers in a row I worked manual labor about 60 hours a week and an occasional 80 hour week. I worked very hard, that is why I got the job back for three summers. I made $10 and I think I deserved what I got. I only called in sick once in the three summers.

This past summer I worked an easier job (electrical) at my college of choice and have been attending at the same time. I have called in twice and have missed several other shifts because of school.

Not all of the younger people out there are lazy, but the ones who are make the rounds so quickly the rest of us look really bad.
