Are AMD 760 boards stable compared to i850 boards?

Abit KG7 or Asus A7M266 or Epox 8K7A?

I don't need raid.

Also, is there any advantage to gettin a Plamino 1.2GHz instead of a Tunderbird 1.4GHz? I don't need MP, but is there any other advantages?

novon,

What do you do with your computer? Games, video encoding, photo shop, heavy number crunching, hosting other computers as a server? That will help us to determine your needs....

I'm building this computer for 3D Studio MAX, I should probably go with Dual-Athlon MP, but the Tyan board is too expensive, I mainly need in the order:

1) Stability ( I have been burned by AMD + VIA before, so I'm wary of AMD)
2) Price (Mobo + CPU + Mem has to be less than $500)
3) Speed (1.2GHz +)
4) Max Memory (More than 1Gig capable)

The AMD760 Northbridge might be as stable as the Northbridge on the i850, but don't forget the Southbridge. All AMD760-based boards use the VIA686B Southbridge, and at least if you're a SB Live! (Audigy) owner, that could be a problem from what I've read here.

Leaning towards Intel... I really don't care if an AMD system is Stable only after months of drivers updates and reading on the latest patches, I just want to plug it in now and not worry about it crashing, is Intel P4 the only way to go (and with which mobo?)?

Prexactly (yes that's a word damnit).

I would suggest the ECS K7S5A (Sis735) or one of the two ALi Magik1 boards (Asus A7A266 or IWill KA266). They don't offer the raw performance of the AMD760 northbridge (though the Sis735 is pretty darn close), but you don't have to deal with Via at all.

I don't think Via has ever released a really good chipset. The 686B is one of the worse examples.
I really wish my Motherboard didn't have it :|

If you go with the Sis735 or ALi Magik1 I would suggest you will encounter no problems at all.
Though I like you have been leaning towards intel for the ease of "plug it in and it works".

how's this:

P4 1.7, Abit TH7II, 512MB Corsair RAMBUS?

And what's the difference between socket 478 and socket 423?

Go EPoX 8K7A. And the difference between Socket 478 and 423 is that 478 will be used for future Northwood, while 423 is dieing. 1.7 P4 is good, but a 1.4 Athlon that costs less will out perform it in most things

Socket 478 vs. 423:

I believe that's just pin count found on Pentium 4 CPUs. The older, .18mu P4s have 423 pins, whereas the newer .13mu Northwood P4s have 478. The Northwood hasn't been released yet, but if you want to upgrade to one, you'll need a mobo that supports socket 478.

I am personally waiting for ASUS / Intel's DDR chipset. I'll get that along with a 2.2Ghz Northwood P4 with 512-1024MB of PC2100 DDR RAM (or faster if the Intel chipset supports DDR333).

I would go witht the 423 pin p4 if you want to use rambus as there is currently no or few boards that support 478 pin p4s with rambus.
Most of them are pc133 boards. If you can find a board though that supports the 478 pin and uses rambus I would go with that instead of the 423 pin. The Asus motherboards are the very best boards you can buy. I believe the 423 board is called the p4t and the 478 board is called the p4te.

<< The older, .18mu P4s have 423 pins >>

...as well as the newer .18 P4's have 478 pins 🙂

Here is what I would git...

Asus P4T-E (Northwood ready / socket 478 ready / 533fsb ready) available in 2 weeks

P4 2.2ghz Northwood socket 478 w/512kb L2 cache... available in 2-3 weeks 🙂

512mb PC-800 rev. 2 Samsung rimms (533mhz capable)

<< P4 2.2ghz Northwood socket 478 w/512kb L2 cache... available in 2-3 weeks >>

Fkloster, when did Northwood release move up to Mid October? I though we were looking at early-mid November at earliest.

P.S. I would have to say, that that Northwood rig would be better if the price isn't too high😀

yeah i hope Northwood lives up to the hype unlike NForce 🙁

I am gonna wait for Pc1066 + NW though 😀 it will be l337

unless AMD's Hammer has anything to say about that 😉

Get a Tyan Tiger MP (Dual processor AMD motherboard) - $220
http://www.ibuyer.net/prod.html?id=618456

With Dual 1.2 Ghz AMD Thunderbirds $180
www.newegg.com

And 4X 256MB for a total of 1Gig Registered ECC Crucial PC2100 DDR RAM $160.
www.cruical.com

Total $560. It's $60 over your $500 budget but well worth it. To save money you could go with a single processor now or less ram now and upgrade later to a 2nd processor or more ram.

Very nice. Exactly what I just built last week, except I'm using 2 x 256MB Samsung rather than Corsair. 😀

"And what's the difference between socket 478 and socket 423?"

Absolutely none. Socket423 and Socket478 P4's are both based off the Willamette core. Socket478's (right now) are just Willamettes in a smaller package. In the near future, however, Northwood will launch in mPGA (Socket478) so you are smart to use a Socket478 board for the upgradeability, assuming you plan on upgrading 🙂

My Epox 8k7a is stable as hell, and I leave it on 24/7, haven't had it crash since I first got it up and running 1 month ago.

I haven't had one problem with my Epox 8K7A + Tbird 1.4GHz. No stability issues at all under Win2k. The AMD 760 chipset is quite stable. 🙂

NOTE: Not using an SBLive! - still got my Vortex2.

I need shower...it's not good when you can smell yourself...(note: Just played bball for an hour and a half 🙂).
