RE:"for years? ugh.. we shall see if you are right or wrong. only time will tell..."

Yeah, I tried a lot of suff on the HPs. From slow drip to "snap and fill" to continuous feed.
Also, remanufactured (talk about hit or miss). They were still $15 a cart.

Now I have 10 canons running. I do a lot of volume. Save thousands a year on ink. I suppose if you don't print much, HP will get you by.

Please let us know how you make out.

I just recently got a Epson R200 and am quite happy with it, especially the ability to print right on DVD/CDs.

I can do that as well with my Canon i865 😉.

Canon doesn't have any of the ones with the ability to print onto CDs available in the US, kinda dumb if you ask me.

Complain to your stupid patent office. They let Seiko/Epson patent the printing to CD media IN GENERAL (!), to the effect that no one else can bring a printer to market with that feature - regardless of whether they're doing it in a completely different way or not.

This is why the i860 even exists - everywhere else, it's the full featured and ridiculously popular i865.

Peter,

What is it about the i865 that lets it print CDs? Is there some attachment that an i860 could use. Maybe I can get someone to send one to me from another country...

I`m in the UK remember 😉.

DIRECT PHOTO PRINTING WITH
PICTBRIDGE & BUBBLE JET SUPPORT

Why wait when you can print photos almost instantly, without even using a PC. Just print directly from your PictBridge or Bubble Jet Direct compatible digital camera or camcorder.Enjoy fast, borderless printing on A4, 5" x 7" and 4" x 6" formats. With a handy photo paper tray there's no need to keep constantly switching paper. Plus you can print directly on CD-R and DVD disks, which is far neater and easier than using labels.

Macro2, the i865 does have a removable attachment for CD/DVD printing,it`s in that link above(bit with the arrow at bottom of the printer tray output area of the i865 image).

Ok found a better pic here of the i865 and the CD tray attachment, click here ,( CD/DVD printing attachment is the part with the white arrow).

Close up here. .

Sorry must add this in from the review,
Conclusion

I have always made a clear distinction between Photo Quality and Photo Capable printers, my general rule of thumb is that no printer offering less than six inks can be true Photo Quality. Well I am going to have to re-think my ratings, because the i865 four ink printer has crossed my quality threshold by producing prints which are as good and even better, than many six ink printers I have reviewed. By bringing the drop size down to 2pl and by using a high resolution (4800x1200) Canon have achieved a remarkable quality in this all round printer.
🙂.

You slide the CD in from the front?

Yep it slides in from the front, not tried mine yet with the CD tray but nice to have around for the future.

Read page 3 here & page 9 here for more info.I should point out the CD tray attachment is in two parts like in page 3( CD tray feeder part and CD tray )mine is boxed away so you only need to attach it to the printer when CD/DVD printing.

Mem,

Wow, that's nice. Prints the whole side of the CD. Too bad we can't buy this product in the USA.

Maybe I can get one from Canada? or Mexico...hummm

Mac

Macro2,all I can is the i865 rocks,I`ve printed some digital camera shots using the Canon 6"x4" free sample photo Pro paper supplied with the printer and people that have seen them are amazed at the quality and can`t believe they are done at home on my printer 🙂.

holy sh*t that's cheap... wish I could get those prices...
do you know, are those cartridges good for the C42UX too???

Epson has three models available in the US that will print directly on printable CD/DVDs: R200/R300 (same print engine, different features) and the R800 (uses pigmented archival-quality inks; for photo enthusiasts). I think I remember being in a Fry's Electronics and seeing the i865 on their floor, judging from the obvious CD/DVD printing capability it had.
