Are all Bluetooth headsets PC-compatible?

Hi there,

I've been using Skype more and more frequently, but all I have so far, in terms of equipment is a USB headset (headphones + microphone), which works perfectly, EXCEPT that the cable is quite long (about 4 m) and poses a hazard to room circulation, not to mention the fact that I have to sit in one place during the conversations :)

So I've been looking at Bluetooth headsets, thinking that they could be used as an alternative.

I've been missing out on cellphone technology, so I'm not sure whether the headsets advertised in various places are compatible with my computer... I assume that I would also need to buy a USB Bluetooth dongle or something like that... is the driver installation complicated?

Look at this device, for instance... would this do?

Windows bluetooth driver is somewhat problematic when it comes to headsets. It can be made to work, but with quite a bit of effort. Regardless, if you want to use a headset both with your computer and your cellphone, you need one with multipoint support. I bought Plantronics Voyager 510 USB bundle, which comes with a special USB dongle that identifies itself to OS as a simple audio device, while handling all the bluetooth communications internally. It also comes with PerSonoCall software that plugs into Skype to enable answering calls with the call control button on the headset.

I have not had any problems with my Jabra USB-Bluetooth dongle and my Jabra headset.
