Definitions of "lie":
1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood.
2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression.

Niether applies to acting. Theater is not presented as being true, nor is is meant to deceive the audience. Acting is therefore not lying.

To portray for the sake of our amusement.....that is what actors do...everyone knows full well that they are actors and are indeed portraying characters that are a work of fiction or past history.

...oh, and your co-worker is a fvking moron...

No, an actor is not a liar. A liar is one who deceives people, who wants people to believe that their story is actually real.

An actor is a performer. He puts on a performance that is entertaining to the audience, but there is no deception going on. Someone isn't going to watch Edward Scissorhands and really think that Johnny Depp has scissors for hands.

you mean he doesn't?

i would say they are not, lying implies the said point or moment is true, when we watch movies, it is generally understood as fictional works, either by common sense or the little message at the end of EVERY movie, the previous story is not based on living or dead characters or seomthing to that effect, even when it is billed as based on a true story.
