Read some reviews for a camry and you won'd find such experiences, so my guess would be it's not as reliable as a camry :)

what about a maxima?

Comparing a Nissan to a BMW? I mean, come on... One is a 2nd teir asian import, and the other is The Ultimate Driving Machine. (TM) It's no comparison.

It's hit or miss... you could be lucky and not need more than basic maintenance (with a new Bimmer = free) or you could be unlucky and have big stuff break.

Even basic maintenance is fairly pricey, but then again... you did buy a "luxury" car.

BTW, my friend's 325i (95) served him well for over 5 years without needing more than basic work until someone decided to cut him off with an SUV.

EDIT: overall, the concensus with most mechanics is... they break... lots. Usually minor stuff but $$ is $$.

however once its fixed.. there hasnt been a need to fix it any more..

he has 140K+ miles on it. It still runs strong as heck.

Last thing fixed was the alternator = $700

Prior to take was teh engine gaskets (upper and lower) = $1500

however that was done 2 years prior.

It is an expensive car, but she runs.. once the cost of maintenence goes over the cost of the car, he should sell it.. but knowing my brother he probably wont.. but either case.. its got another 30K on its belt before he gets a new BMW>

It's pricey because they fvcked him over with the service cost.

actually, Lease will not be a bad idea for that car, you pay a relatively small amount for a car in its mint condition. and then you will throw that car back to dealer when it need maintance most.

You know you've made it when you can afford a used BMW. Repairs are going to be 3x's as expensive when compared to other manufacturers. My buddy is getting his oil chanced on his 325Ci this week at BMW and they are charging him $200. You gotta pay if you wanna play.

aren't basic maintance free for the first 48 months for all new BMW purchases? I read it in a newspaper ad and one of my friend told me. I didn't believe at first, until I read the ad.

Your buddy is getting ripped off. I have a 97 M3 and the BMW dealership only charges me $59. He might be getting the routine maintence that they do. Inspection 1 is about every 15k and Inspection 2 about every 30k. Something like that.

Your buddy is either lazy or retarded. Paying $200 for an oil change? WONDERFUL.

Pay if you wanna play? IT IS AN OIL CHANGE. JESUS CHRIST.

I've got a 95 325i 5 speed w/95K miles.

Recently, I had the radiator, thermostat and ball joints replaced for about $700. Before that I had the brakes (from neglect) and AC replaced for about $1500. Also had little things like the wiper break ($100) which I couldn't fix myself because I would be forced to remove a ton of engine parts to get at the wiper.

On top of that, the car is very susceptable to water affecting the lights. Standing water within the headlamp, fog and taillight assemblies regularly shorts out the lights. Right now I have a fog light and license plate light that are out.

Edit: On a mechanical note, my mechanic who is a head mechanic at a big BMW dealership, tells me the I6 engine is bulletproof. Its usually the other stuff around it that goes bad. He says the radiator regularly goes at around 100K miles since it is subject to extreme temperature changes and is made of plastic. If you are looking at a car with that many miles, you may want to see if they already replaced it.

Tell your buddy there's a service charge they haven't told him about. I'll fill you in more when you PM me.

I recently had some work done on my 92 525i.

Noise in the front end = upper control arms.

Pair of upper control arms w/ 750i/L bushings pressed = $200 shipped.

Labor from trusty BMW mechanic = $100.

Only one control arm was making noise, but I wanted both sides to have to modified bushing, so I bought the pair...
