Edmunds consumer reviews are really split on it, with many facing thousands of dollars worth of repairs within 50,000 miles, while some going up to 150,000 miles with very little problems.

The smaller of the 3 series engines are more reliable. They are less bored out and have the least problems. My dad's 325 has over 270,000 miles on it now.

my brothers BMW, 318is has had repairs, and yes when it is repaired its pricey..

however once its fixed.. there hasnt been a need to fix it any more..

he has 140K+ miles on it. It still runs strong as heck.

Last thing fixed was the alternator = $700

Prior to take was teh engine gaskets (upper and lower) = $1500

however that was done 2 years prior.

It is an expensive car, but she runs.. once the cost of maintenence goes over the cost of the car, he should sell it.. but knowing my brother he probably wont.. but either case.. its got another 30K on its belt before he gets a new BMW>

My ex-roommate used to take his car to the dealer ALL the time. His car was only 1 or 2 years old at the most. My friend had an older 3-series and I heard he used to bring his to the shop all the time too. I think it's split because even with all these stories, I've heard many good stories as well.

Your brother got scammed if he paid $700 for an alternator.

my friend's gf's 1999 323 has plenty of minor electric and brakes problems. Though not costly (I think the repairs were free under warranty), my friend complained that the bimmer was fixed in the dealer more than driven on the road.

personally, I wanted to jump on the 325 sedan 2 yr lease for 299 a month :)

even though technically you can call the 3-series convertible a spider, but it just doesn't sound right. Don't tell me to tried to put the Mitsu Eclipse "Spyder" emblem on the bimmer?

You mean "Are they Toyota?"

No.

You mean "Are they Kia?"

No.

They're somewhere inbetween, though. ;)

i wouldn't be willing to gamble 25k+ on a 50/50 split in terms of reliability, as big a fan of the 3 series as I am

Read some reviews for a camry and you won'd find such experiences, so my guess would be it's not as reliable as a camry :)

Yeah, they have some nice fat tires in the back too. Just imagine how many spiders you will be able to kill with that!
