I'm having a hard time digesting this statistic - 1/4 (roughly) gays voted for Bush. Are 1/4 just ignorant? Bible thumper-gays perhaps [is that possible]? Are there that many log-cabin republicans?

Link (search for "gay")

Another one...Kerry only won the "young" vote by 9%. How'd that happen? I thought colleges & young poeple overwhelmingly voted for Kerry?

Maybe pushing their agenda on the rest of America wasnt their top priority? You know many peoples view of the world isnt limited to a very small agenda.

There's a very large religious, gay community. I don't get it, but I guess they're used to love-hate relationships (where they're the ones loving, and the person/thing they love hates them)?

As for the young people vote, what are the ages that is concerning? Also, just because you're young doesn't mean you weren't raised conservative. Why else would you have kids running around loving Jesus when all they know is what has been indoctrinated into them by their parents and a religious school?

Maybe for the same reasons as other people voted for Bush; they believe (rightly or wrongly) that national interests, or business interests, or some other thing, are more important at this time than voting on homosexual rights issues.

I've personally met some bible-thumping (pentecostal) gays. I find it stunning that they can be so hated by their own church (including several pastors, one of whom was clearly a closet homosexual despite his wife and child, but I digress;)) and yet still believe in it so strongly. The people they went to church with (note: by which I obviously mean only the particularly salient, hateful ones, others at the church seemed to be much better Christians, but of course had less direct effect on the gay people themselves) are IMHO some of the most intolerant, judgemental people I've ever encountered. It's a particularly unpromising combination, but yes, there are in fact openly gay people who are fundamentalist christians.

It makes sense. There were many self-loathing gays that voted for Bush just as there were overwhelming numbers of self-loathing heterosexuals that voted for Kerry. ;)

Ok, now that's funny. I don't care who you are, that's funny. Git 'er done.

I think I was one of those self-loathing hetero's. I voted for Kerry, but I didn't really think he would be a good leader. I just thought he had to be better than the worst president we've ever had as a nation.

I think we would need an actual homosexual that voted for Bush to explain this one. Other than that we can only guess. Does this board have a single homosexual that voted for Bush?

Perhaps those gay Americans who voted for Bush were the same gay Americans who responded to Mary Cheney's gay and lesbian outreach program for Coors Brewing Co.

She got them drunk on Coors and they voted for Bush. They must have had one hell of a hangover on November 3rd once they realized what they had done.

Seriously, haven't you people ever heard of the Log Cabin Republcians?

One more point, a three to one losing margin hardly qualifies as an endorsement of Bush by the gay community.

Shall I assume you've experieinced them all to know, or has Morford's karmic vibrator affected you on its way to Uranus?

I have experienced everything and everyone. I know all, see all, and on good days feel all. If you need to know the answer to anything, feel free to ask me. :D

I'll have to talk to my stepbrother - he's a CPA, I don't know who he voted for, but probably Bush. Lives in Ohio too :D I'll let you know after thanksgiving :)

I just don't understand it. "Gay" was supposed to be the huge dividing issue this year. Heck, more gays voted for Bush than "liberals" (13% liberals I believe). It just doesn't make sense.

Well, it makes sense if you throw out the argument that all gays feel persecuted, or believe they are being denied civil rights. Obviously 25% of them at least don't feel that way.

A Gay friend I talk to is from a strong Republican family. Kerry was just a Ted Kennedy to him. He's a long time Republican, poor & fighting AIDs, but STILL sends in his $10 to the Republicans when they fund raise by mail. I think, to him, its a mental thing with being brain washed by family all those years, and a thinking that ALL Democrats are Ted Kennedy's at heart. I dont know, its pretty strange of him. He loves Arnold too (my friend lives in San Diego). I've told him many times that if not for Democrats, and if Jessy Helms would of got his way, he would not have those programs that pay most his rent and pay for those pills that have kept him alive for over 15 years with AIDs. He's very lucky and quite healthy. I just dont understand his mind...

Homosexuality is just one sin among many. If churches kept out sinners, there wouldn't be any parishoners.

What is so difficult to understand? You can't paint people with a broad brush, even 'groups' of people such as homosexuals have diversity, groups are made up of individuals.

So, 1/4 gays may be ignorant, but if so it's not for the reason you think.

I think that gays that voted for Bush rightly realize that you can be opposed to homosexual marrigage and not "hate" homosexuals.

Who says that all gays support homosexual marriage anyways?

Maybe gay marriage wasn't their top reason for voting? Who knows, you'd have to ask them. But I think this conservative math is pretty cool.

Kerry winning the youth vote by 9% isn't overwhelming, but Bush winning the popular vote by 3% is a mandate.

That's pretty interesting logic :)

anyone who thinks democrats are going to do anything for gay rights is deluding themselves. many democrats including kerry have come out publicly against gay marriage. Oregon, where kerry won also voted for the ban on gay marriage. if it was a big issue then california and NY would already have voted gay marriage into law a long time ago.

I don't think that 9% is overwhelming considering the amount of effort the DNC made to attract young voters and the amount of disinformation they were deluged with.
