Today, I just applied some Arctic Silver II. Here are my steps how I applied it:

1. Cleaned the Heatsink with vegetable oil (Mikewarrior2's tip)
2. Cleaned the CPU, and removed the old thermal grease (also with vegetable oil)
3. Applied the Arctic Silver II grease. It's just a very thin layer

The temps stay the same, as they were before. What did I do wrong?

Thanx for any help.

So do you think I should take the HS off again, and use rubbing alcohol?

Thanx for any info

If your heatsink comes with the "chewing gum" thermal layer like my Taisol did, I'd remove it with "De-Solv-it", a multi-purpose solvent for removal of oil(vegetable), tar, grease, adhesives, and chewing gum. I then use 91% Isopropyl alcohol to remove all solvents. 91% isopropyl alcolol unlike rubbing alcohol contains no lubricating oils. Acetone also seems to completely evaporate without any oily residue. Lastly, apply your Arctic Silver.
I've only used the original Artic Silver, not the newer II product.
Good luck.

PS. I Use Q-tips for that scale of work.

ndee, I would, only because you claim the Artic Silver is less effective. We're talking about thin layers so just maybe that thin layer of oil is acting as a thermal insulator defeating your Artic Silver. Oil is purely organic so it shouldn't be a good thermal conductor IMO.

Vegetable Oil works, but you need to clean off the vegetable oil off with Isopropyl alcohol first before applying the AS2.

Also, if you're just cleaning grease off, Isopropyl alcoholw ill work fine by itself... the Vegetable oil is just one alternative for cleaning off a Thermal Pad or a PCTC pad.

OK, it doesn't help at all :( I rubbed with this alcohol long enough I guess, so that the oil shouldn't be there anymore. It gets again 48°, and that was the temp, like it was before....

I'm kinda dissapointed. I applied a thin layer of AS II on the core, as shown on the arcticsilver.com page. What else could be wrong?

Thanx for any help

i donno about you...
but i don't think as II is suppose to knock off more than a degree or two.
from the reviews that i've been reading, they're going for that one degree difference
when they apply. many hard core o/c'ers do care about that one or two degree difference... especially when your cpu is running close to it's max.

i have volcano II with asII. on duron 700@933 7x133@1.84v
it used to do lower 50's with a generic hsf and that gum stuff.
i donno, which is making the difference (whether vII or asII) but
now i'm doing upper 30's.

good luck.

but wait..., I thought it would make a diffrence between 2 and 7 degrees..... that's what I heard hear.....

BTW, are you testing on a socket-a platform? 2-7C core temp drop, but socket-a boards can nowhere even remotely measure core temp....

you might be thinking fahrenheit instead of celcius.

ndee, nowhere in your My Rig profile and in this thread did you mention the HSF you're using. Do you care to share? I know you're expecting a thermal improvement from your AS2, but if you're having a general heat problem perhaps the HSF is your problem? Also, your case could be sufficating your cpu.

I've seen a lot of posts about the Artic Silver and its effectiveness so far.. can anyone tell me how much of a difference this would make vs. any other thermal compound? I've built dozens of systems before, but I've applied whatever thermal compound came with the HSF, and they've sufficed so far. Also, where can I find some of this stuff (Artic Silver and Artic Silver II)? Thanks!

I have the FOP32-1 now installed... with the fan it came with... I sh!t on quietness, and want to do now some overclocking ;) I'm now at 45° with the Tbird 700@765... Dunno how high I can go... I'll try 850 if it's possible...

Alright, I think I pushed this baby to the limits. It would bring random errors in Windows when posting at 8.5x100. So I tried 8x105, but it also looked up. All done at max voltage(1.85V). So I think I'll stick at 800 and just be happy ;) Or is there something else I could try?

Thanx

Oh, man... You shouldn't lead with your jaw, dude. ;)
Seriously, I wouldn't tempt the fates with OCing your FSB with that mainboard. It's got the wrong chipset for real overclocking.
