I got a processor that has old thermal material stuck on the side (outside of the core) of the processor. I've afraid to even touch the surface of the processor for fear of damage. I have always cleaned the core but i never xpd cleaning the chip itself. The thermal material that is on the chip itself has turned hard. i can't even pick it off. I've just recently heard of the Arcticlean 1 and 2 bottles. Has anyone had anykind of xp using this stuff? And is it safe to use on the chip itself instead of the core? thx in advance for any help.

Yes, I've used the stuff. It *should* be fine. When I was using it, I used too much, and it got all over the resistors and stuff on my Xeon, but I plugged it in, and the processor is fine. So I would highly recommend the stuff...
Tas.

What exactly do you mean by "chip" and what exactly do you mean by core?

You can clean the CPU with Isopropyl alcohol. 90% is best.
Do it with the CPU installed on the motherboard. Touch the PSU case before and while cleaning to make sure that your body is at the same potential is the ground plane to avoid ESD damage.

The little black thing is a chip (integrated circuit)! The processor, in that case, is a hybrid (it is made up of multiple components including an integrated circuit placed on a pcb).

Regardless of what is called what, you can use alcohol to clean the components as long as you are not aggressive with the tiny components (capacitors). The little black raised square is soldered on the PCB. So, you cannot damage it by cleaning it.

ArctiClean has been shown to be more effective than 99% "pure" isoproyl alcohol.

It's not harmful if it runs off the core, just make sure you clean it all up so it's not present while in use.
