How conductive is this stuff? Their site says it's not conductive but they say not to get it on traces and stuff as it could give you problems. If it's not conductive then how can it cause problems?

Reason I ask is I bought a 2000+ XP and there was some kind of compound all around the core. I asked the guy I bought it off of what he used and he say nothing but Arctic Silver. Well I can't get all of it off and it got in between the little legs on a couple of the components. Only thing I could do it take a needle and try and scrape it out best I could.

Will this stuff hurt the CPU? Short it out or anything after using it a while? I can't test it till tomorrow.

The best you could probably do is cut off the AS5 straight down the middle on where you think the AS5 touches 2 metal parts, so then it doesn't short. As long as AS5 isn't touching 2 pins or more together, you should be fine.

see I got out what I could see but there is a amount that just will not come off. I don't know if it stains or what. I tried using alcohol to clean it. I didn't ask if he used AS5 or some other product by them. It has a thicker feel to it then what I remember when I used AS. Whatever he used it used way to much.

I dont know much about the conductivity of AS5, but I do know this stuff works awesome for cleaning it off of heatsincs:

Hi, Heat sink compounds are HEAT CONDUCTIVE and not ELECTRICALY CONDUCTIVE.

Very true, but I have heard mixed reviews about some of the compounds out on the market including AS5. AS5 does contain some metal particles which in a liquid base I would think could have some conductive qualities, someone here should do an experiment.

No it is not conductive to electricity. Go ahead and test it.

AS5 has capacitive properties which can cause problems if it's smeared around the traces near your CPU.

I'm surprised you couldn't get it off with alcohol...it always works for me. What purity?

Try dumping some alcohol onto the effected area and letting it "soak" for a bit before you try to scrub the mess off. Some particularly stubborn thermal pads have required that AND 90%+ purity alcohol for me to clean off before.
