would it sufficiently cool the q6600 overclocked to around the 3-3.4ghz mark in a p182 case, or would i have to spend the extra cash and get something like the tuniq tower?
thanks
You're right I got off topic. If you can afford it, and I'm sure it will fit in your p182 case, go for the the Tuniq, if you already have the Freezer Pro try it.
I'm building a system with a Q6600 GO stepping, Abit IP35-E MB, an el cheapo. $0.99 AR, Cooler Master Hyper TX2 HSF, and an Antec 900 case. I wasn't hoping for much of an oc but got my Q6600 GO stable up to 3.6 Ghz, 1.3575V bios, 1.312V CPUZ(idle), at 34 C idle, 58 C load Prime95 (all 4 cores) Small FFts. Temps measured with Core Temp, room temp 68 F.
Your CPU HSF is only part of the CPU cooling equation. You also need a case with excellent airflow and low ambient temps. I think the Antec 900 case fans (set at mid range), especially the monster fan directly on top of the CPU HS, and the low ambient temp, contributed the most to the low CPU temps. I was expecting load temps in the 70's with that oc. So, it is possible to cool the nuclear reactor of a Q6600 with just a cheap HSF.
I also replaced those POS plastic push pins on the HS with a Thermalright Bolt-Thru kit. Not sure if this helped temps, but my HS is super secure.
Edit: I stopped at 3.6 Ghz. With a little more voltage my Q6600 may be capable of going higher, but of course my CPU temps will rise. For every bump in voltage I got about a 5 c rise in load temps. I could also try putting all the fans on my Antec 900 to the high setting, if I wore ear plugs.
