Ok I know most everyone here likes the zalman XP-90 or XP-120 for the AMD Athlon 64 CPU's. But I want a Silent Heat Sink with out the need for a FanMate. I was thinking about getting the Thermaltake A1838 for AMD Opteron/Athlon64 http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant...=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=130129 But I have heard that it is not really very Silent. So I am looking for a VERY Silent well cooling Heat Sink that does not come with a FAN Mate. I will be using it for a Athlon 64 3700+ SSE3 CPU!

Have any of you used the arctic-cooling Heat Sinks?

It is the Thermalright XP-90 and XP-120.... Zalman makes the 7000 alcu, 7000 cu and the 7700 alcu and 7700 cu

For the money and noise levels the best you can get is either the Zalman 7700 cu (120mm fan, and all copper heatsink) or the XP-120 with a quiet fan. Both heatsinks are so large that they don't need that much airflow to keep them at reasonable temps and thusly keeping the noise down. From what I have heard though, the XP-120 is not compatible with all motherboards due to its size.

What's wrong with the Zalman FanMate? Most Athlon 64 motherboards can adjust the CPU fan speed automatically, especially when you enable Cool n Quiet.

it doesn't have to... my friends fanmate doesnt even affect (noticably) the speeda nyway so he has it plugged directly into the header on his motherboard... yo can do that

It doesn't stick out at all. You plug the fan into it and the Fan Mate into the motherboard. It's about the size of my thumb.
