Just an update, unless I got a gimped one, the Archos 15GB MP3 Recorder is NOT USB 2.0. It doesn't even pull that USB 2.0 High-Speed/Full-Speed crap. Instead it just says USB 2.0 compatible and the box says 1MB/sec transfer speed.

Now it could just the 15GB HD is slow, my USB 2.0 card is bad, or my expectations for the speed of the device is too high, but it appears to me it is actually USB 1.1.

Did anyone else order/have this MP3 player? Was it running at true USB 2.0 for you?

Just curious if anyone can verify if the 15GB Recorder actually supports USB 2.0 transfer rates. I just got one of these devices, but I only have USB 1.0 on my PC, so can't verify the transfer rate. My box had a sticker slapped on the outside that states "USB 2.0 Compatible", but I would hope that someone can provide definitive info before I go out and buy a USB 2.0 card.

Thanks in advance

I don't know for certain if the ones from Outpost are USB 2.0, but I'm fairly certain they make a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 15gb model:

From their FAQ page:

My Jukebox Recorder 15 / 20 came with USB 2.0, what is this and how do I use it?

A: USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a peripheral-to-PC connection. If your computer has USB 2.0 you will be able to take advantage of high speed data transfer (i.e. copy files quicker to your Jukebox). Most computers come with USB 1.1 ports located on the front and back panels of your computer. Note: Always use the USB plug on the back of your computer as the front one does not always work with devices that require power.

USB 1.1 transfers data up to 12 Mbps

USB 2.0 transfers data up to 480 Mbps

USB 2.0 device are backwardly compatible with existing USB technology. This means that you can use your Jukebox on a USB 1.1 equipped computer but will only be able to transfer data at USB 1.1 speed. If you have a computer with USB 2.0 you will be able to transfer data at USB 2.0 speed.

Until I hear from a person who ordered and received a 1.1 model instead of a hi-spead 2.0, I'll keep my order active.

And to add insult to injury there is both a USB 1.1 and a USB 2.0 high speed version of the Jukebox Recorder 15. You're supposed to be able to tell by the color of the bumpers on the corners (grey is newer), but evidently Outpost wasn't shipping the same product they had pictured?

The one I got has dark gray/black bumpers, but I have seen recorders with blue bumpers as well. Has anyone who received one with gray/black bumpers been able to use USB 2.0 transfer rates? Someone else suggested the bumper color issue previously, but I haven't heard it confirmed yet.

Thanks in advance

All of the 20 gig Recorders are USB2.0.

just got back from Fry's. The one they have is not the faster USB model. It's the 12Mb /second (not the 480Mb/second. They also have the 20GB Recorder that IS the 480 Mb/Second. The Archos website and tech support also has no knowledge of a 15 GB USB2 version.

Dallas area Fry's have this item listed for $160 for this weekend, even though it isn't available from outpost anymore. Check the price at other area Fry's.

I bought the 20 gig recorder model at CC, after cancelling my Fry's order. I am a bit disappointed with the 1.1 Usb
transfer speed though. I've already have had to replace the charger. The recorder didn't come with a pouch, which I was a bit miffed about. I went back to CC, and explained my position. They promptly opened a box to a Jukebox Multimedia and gave me a pouch. I already own a 5 gig player model, which is actually more stable when I take it along for a walk. The 20 Gig drops out when I walk, The 5 Gig doesn"t have that problem.

If your package didn't include a pouch, I would be suspicious that it was previously owned or refurbed. Also, the latest JBR 15 & 20 are USB 2.0 - supposedly the indication of a newer model is that the corner bumpers are black instead of blue.

/me takes a hammer smashes self in the head...

Ok people... Do not say it's USB 2.0, It's the rev of a spec, not a speed rating!

In USB 2.0 spec there is Low-speed (1.5Mbits|192Kbytes/sec), Full-speed (12Mbits|1.5Mbytes/sec), Hi-speed (480Mbits|60Mbytes/sec)

USB (1.0) started with Low-speed(as it's called in the USB 2.0 spec), USB 1.1 introduced Full-Speed, and 2.0 added Hi-speed. So for now on, PLEASE refer to them ONLY as [Low/Full/Hi]-speed USB... Just leave the USB 2.0 off completely in fact!

As other people have said in this thread, just because they say it's this speed, doesn't mean that USB-IF inc, certified it as this. Even if they did (check here to see). It won't mean it will be at the full bus rate the whole(if at all) time you use it.
