Archie Manning should talk...he has how many SB rings?

Flames aside, I think it is in poor taste for Archie Manning to turn around and say his son doesn't want to play for the Chargers. You can't always get what you want, especially in something like the NFL Draft. For as much noise as is made about the Mannings, none of the them has a SB ring. Peyton has been successful, but he still can't get his team to the next level. Personally I doubt Eli will be that special in the NFL, IMO. Amazing what a little name recognition can do. Ok, rant off, flames on...

First off, Archie was a great QB on terrible teams. I think he fears for his son, in the way that he doesn't want him to go through the same thing. If Eli was drafted by the Chargers, he would be in the same boat as Archie was.

Secondly, Petyon hasn't taken his team to the next level? WTF are you talking about? He got them to the AFC Championship game this year. Playoffs before that. I don't think its Peytons fault that the Colts Defense sucked.

Finally, Eli is not as skilled as his brother was coming out of college. In the right situation, he could thrive. If he was drafted by the Chargers, he will be the next Ryan Leaf.

Based on the interviews with Archie that I saw on ESPN last night, I think he came out of this looking respectful. Granted, he made it lclear that he didn't want Eli to play for the Chargers, but I think the final decision was made by Eli. Also, it was San Diego that brought the situation to the media, as Archie apparently wanted to keep it underneath the table.

"You know I don't do contracts. But what you do have is my word. And it's stronger than oak."

Seriously though, all he wants is his son to play for a good team with a good record and good ownership. Archie knows all about playing for a weak program and never having a chance to make a difference.

what ever happened to tee martin? he took his team to the next level (something peyton didn't do) and yet is nowhere.

I understand that Archie is concerned for his son, but it's total crap that athletes can do that. There is a draft for a reason and you should have to deal with it. Now that Eli has confirmed that he will not play for the chargers it just keeps getting worse. I think he deserves any negative attention he can get from this. I hope players in the league give him crap for years to come. I wish there was a way for the league to deal with this, but there really isn't anything I can think of.

Tee just happened to be in the right place at the right time in Tennessee. He accomplished a whole lot while there with a lot of help from the rest of the team, but he's no Peyton.

John Elway did essentially the same thing and I don't hear anyone complaining. The fact is this, if Eli has a great career, no one will remember this. If he turns out to be a bust (I really hope not), then he'll be carrying around this baggage even once he's done playing.

Exactly.

Eli is physically superior, but he's retarded when it comes to preparation, studying films, analyzing strategies and discipline. The NFL's secondary is going to be a wee bit tougher than the SEC's

I agree

well its not as if Eli has to carry the whole team on his shoulders alone.
the chargers do have a certain running back that caught a ton of passes and can run like crazy, obviously.
ryan leaf did not have that luxury.
granted eli is probably a better talent and has more of a level head than leaf.

but, i dont see what their problem is. LT would carry that team anyways, regardless if eli is there or not.
maybe thats what they are afraid of.

if eli was smart...he should head towards the chargers....

I've had LT2 on my fantasy team for 2 years and he's done real well. I mean, if eli goes in there, LT2, would be an even better running back since eli will take the pressure off him. This also allow eli to pass wo LT2, in addition to D. Boston. Why would he pass up this opportunity? Where else can he go? The only other place that I see is maybe Bucs....and you know what they say about the bucs don't you?

f* the bucs! :|

Great plan, but David Boston got traded to Miami a few months ago. 🙂

Boston is in Miami. Where did the bucs come from? The other team in this is the Giants. Do you follow football other than at fantasy draft time?

I am a life long charger fan and it disgusts me to see this happen. In response to noone complaining about Elway, well it happened over 20 years ago and ATOT wasnt around. I never liked Elway for doing that just like I have always disliked Eric Lindros for doing it to. These pampered athletes dictating where they go to play a game for millions of dollars is wrong.

How can Eli go to a winning team when the giants were 4-12 also?

I agree with each of your statements.

A lot of people complained back then about Elway too, it's just been a damn long time since then. Same thing with Steve Francis not that long ago, noone is complaining now, but for the first couple years people figured he would be a cancer. These kids shouldnt expect special treatment because they are the best.

I guarantee you that you're either a Charger fan like New2AMD, or you're a fan of another terrible team.

Let's clear somethings up:

1) Archie simply told the Chargers that he didn't want his son there. Is that so hard to believe? They're the worst team in football, period. They have NO wide receivers. None. Eli won't take any pressure off of LT because he doesn't have anyone to throw to. They have to O-line to protect him, so that would make him look even worse.

2) Archie has never said anything about NYG. Period. He merely said that he didn't think his son was a good fit in SD. If you Chargers fans don't like it, get a coach that's worth a sh*t. If you think Schottenheimer's worth a damm, think again.

3) Archie was a great QB. He was only unable to get a ring because of the ineptitude of those around him. No one person can "carry" a team to a Super Bowl. Name me one time that a SB team won becuse of one good player and nobody else.

4) He's a father that wants the best for his son. Why are you people faulting him for this? My father's a State Senator. He doesn't break the law for me, but if he can help me in any way to get ahead using his stature and his name, he will. He trusts me not to make him look like a schmuck because of it. Same thing here.

5) This isn't something that's unique to the Chargers. Look at the Bengals. They came back BIG TIME last season, but still they can't get big players. Why? The stigma of being a bad team. They'll have to struggle to get back just the same as every other bad team. That's just the way it goes.

Chargers fans should just look to the Giants and watch Roid-boy knock 1500 more homers out of the park this year and see if that makes them feel better.

1. Tim Dwight isn't bad. The big problem they had was the inconsistesy of Drew Brees this year. Their defense lost quite a few starters too.
2. He clearly stated New York was where he wanted Eli to go, in the ESPN interview
3.Agreed.
4.Agreed.
5.Somewhat agreed. The Chargers have had their moment, but fan support in that area is usually not there. A team should never be bad consistently in the NFL. If it is, the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of the team owner.
