archery

It's pretty cool... great way to build concentration... I used cardboard boxes for target practise and got pretty good at it...

Essentially, yeah. You might want to read up a little before doing it, so you don't hurt yourself, but it's not too complicated.

pick up a nice simple bow, and have someone explain the proper way to hold it, adjusting the sight (the thing that you look at your target with) and other basic stuff before you get started. Good luck 🙂

I used to make bows with my neighbor. One time he actually found a length of stick that ended up making a pretty decent bow. You could rreally lob those arrows with it.

Archery is lots of fun. I shoot recurves and compounds both, although my favorite is my Bear Kodiak Special. My dad owns probably 3 dozen hunting bows, one of them a Paul Schaffer custom. On a good day, he lets me hold it.
Don't start by using sights! Learn to hit targets by using your own judgment first, lest you be spoiled for good!
Any hunting store would probably be able to set you up with the essentials, Bass Pro and Cabela's are good sources for ordering as well.

I had archery as one of my two physical education courses in college. Its great fun and (IMHO) improves your concentration and coordination. After this class, I was a crack shot with any rifle.

doesn't wal-mart have archery gear also? might want to start cheap and work your way up once you've learned the basics. I always seemed to have problems with the action of the bow string hurting my fingers and forearm (even with the leather guards on)

It's all in the technique. The guards will only prevent worse injury if you are not using the bow correctly.

I played it this year in gym class, I usually did pretty well but always ended up with welts on the arm I held the bow with because whenever I would shoot the arrow, the string would hit my arm and leave a huge red mark... 🙁

oh and I won a lollipop for getting the most points!

I think you might be happier if you went to an archery shop, told them what you wanted to do, and they could get you a good set-up. Most archery shops (at least around here) have indoor ranges, and many have outdoor ranges as well. A lot of them have leagues - you might enjoy an archery league. Kinda like a bowling league, but with a little more skill and a little less luck. (no offense meant, bowlers)
