All you other "old timers" here on ATOT know what I am talking about. The crazy colored carpeting, the neon lights and dim atmosphere, the music, the sounds, the GAMES!

Those of us that lived our youth and teenage years in the 80s were truly blessed to experience the golden age of arcades and video games. An experience that has no equal.

Those who lived it, remember the good times and see how many games you can identify. You younger ones that missed out, try to imagine being there.

Now watch this video and be transported back to the 80s:

Arcades, 80's...life was GOOD!

Awesome! One thing I'd love to be able to afford one day is an arcade room in my house done up just like an 80's arcade.

Spent a lot of time in Arcades in the 80's. Favorites were the arcades in the mall and also the one in Pier 39 in SF.

Used to buy 50 tokens for $10 and play for many hours.

Agreed, "arcades" now suck Elena Kagan's sweaty ballsack. Only 3 types of "games" exist any more: driving type games that force you to ride on some chunk of plastic, shooting type games that force you to use a crappy plastic fake gun, and ticket dispensing games. Side-scrolling platformers, fighting games, sports games, multi-player cabinets (X-men, TMNT, Simpsons, etc), even pinball are all practically extinct.

Arcade memories!! Still have a token or 2 somewhere.^_^

The best were the tabletop games at the pub. Crush Roller, Dig Dug, Mr. Do, Ms. Pacman, Popeye, Donkey Kong, Ghouls & Ghosts...

God I really miss arcades. They still have a lot of arcades in Hong Kong. They have the typical music games and driving games. But they also have a lot of fighting games and a few "gambling" games (horse racing, poker, etc.). But they don't have pinball. I sorely miss pinball. :(

My first job was in an arcade. Talk about fox minding the hen house.

The closest thing I remember to arcades in the 80s was having to sit in a bar, and get endless amounts of coins to be occupied with crappy games while my dad got shitfaced and thrown out during bar fights. :hmm:

I remember in 91, senior year in high school, I was bored during study hall. I took out a notebook and started listing every arcade game I had played. This went for weeks, and I had THOUSANDS! (Or at least well over a thousand)

As luck would have it, the corner grocery store would always have 2-3 arcade games, and they were always the cutting edge AAA titles!

Recently, I went to a hole-in-the-wall arcade-minigolf-family fun center. They had Ivan Stewart's Super Off-Road. What a great game. Now, if only I could have had 2 other buddies from the 6th grade with me there again! :D

Meh, you only like arcades because that's what you had when you were a child. I'd gladly take almost any game console newer than the NES over an arcade place.

Part of the fun is that it cost quarters to keep playing. You do lose that on the console, which paradoxically can also be used as a reason to justify the console.

I will admit that I had some good times on Rampage, but that was when I was 5-10 in the mid-90's. It was fun and possibly better than the NES we had at home, but I never really liked blowing $5 in one sitting. Granted back in those days $5 was worth something, blah blah blah.

Anyway, ignoring the cost I still think the quality of games available on an SNES is better than most all arcade games. Add in that many of the best arcade games were ported over to consoles and it seems like a no-brainer.
