According to the US government.
MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) – Some Students at Mansfield ISD schools could soon be learning Arabic as a required language. The school district wants students at select schools to take Arabic language and culture classes as part of a federally funded grant.
The Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant was awarded to Mansfield ISD last summer by the U.S. Department of Education.

As part of the five-year $1.3 million grant, Arabic classes would be mandatory at Cross Timbers Intermediate School and Kenneth Davis Elementary School. The program would also be optional for students at T. A. Howard Middle School and Summit High School.
Parents at Cross Timbers say they were caught off-guard by the program, and were surprised the district only told them about it in a meeting Monday night between parents and Mansfield ISD Superintendent Bob Morrison.

The DOE has identified Arabic as a ‘language of the future.’ But parent Joseph Balson was frustrated by the past. “Why are we just now finding out about it?” asked Balson. “It’s them (Mansfield ISD) applying for the grant, getting it approved and them now saying they’ll go back and change it only when they were caught trying to implement this plan without parents knowing about it.”

I am pretty sure that if English isn't going to be the language of the future than Chinese has to be 2nd in the running.

So, what do you think the language of the future is?

It has to be a Latin based language. I don't see it going any other way.

Err, I would have thought Chinese would be more useful. Once the Middle East oil fields run dry, we are talking about a completely barren desert.

Of course this is the way:

The people in the future speak a complete mix of English, Chinese, Turkish and, indeed, all world languages, which sounds something like this: [makes three guttural sounds]

I think you're reading this wrong. i think they mean that Arabic will be an important language to know in the future, not that it will be like the only language spoken or the official language.

Actually English is becoming more and more the universal language. Children in many countries learn English as well as their native tongue.

As for Arabic, it certainly is valuable due to the large number of people who speak it, and the relative lack of Americans who speak it. The oil won't run out for quite awhile, so Arabic speakers will still have a large economic clout.

There isn't really a language called "Chinese". Its a family of languages.

The best we can offer would be standard Mandarin. The thing is, that's like learning Hindi to speak to Indians, when their primary non-english language isn't actually Hindi. For anything tech/science related, they learn English anyway.

Arabic as a mandatory language makes no sense. I would put right up there with German. Its just not going to get much use unless you're in very specific countries. If I were to suggest a very specific/isolated language, I'd go with Japanese or Russian.

Dear God Patranus, you never fail to disappoint.

It says A Language of the future, not THE Language of the future.

Furthermore, there is no language known as "Chinese".

Fix your title NOW.

That's just bullshit PR. More Americans knowing Arabic and muslim cultures is good because it creates more Americans for foreign service and military positions dealing with arab countries. It helps us figure out which ones to drop bombs on.

if the Muslims have their way, regardless of what countrie they immigrate from, the most important language to know will be arabic or a dialect of arabic, which I do know, due to my ancestry.

Don`t think for a minute that the Muslims don`t have a hidden agenda...lolol
They are sort of like the Borg of Star Trek the Next Generation -- resistance is futile, throw down your weapons and prepare to be assimilated.....

People keep bringing up oil, but do they forget the shortest sea routes from China to Europe and the eastern US go through many Arabic speaking countries. Much of the middle easts money comes from Trade as well as oil and until we can star-trek beam stuff around trade will continue to be a large part of their economy and something everyone will have to deal with.

So there's one stupid school district teaching Arabic. I don't see how their mistake makes Arabic the language of the future.

Umm, it was the Federal Department of Education that made that statement and provided the money for the program and it's stipulations. It's a huge atrocity and shows just where this administrations allegiances lay.

Seriously. There is a massive difference between that statement with these words interchanged, and only a complete, admitted, unashamed troll would try to convince you otherwise. Then again, we already know who we're dealing with here.

Arabic would be a good language to learn, as it would be good to understand what the enemy is saying. Just as Spanish is very useful in terms of being able to communicate with the people who cook our food, clean our hotel rooms, etc.
