well, i just arrived in the uk today and all the news here seemed to be splashing the iraqi torture photos; i figured this is big news in the usa, and well, i log on to foxnews and front page news is michael jackson! Fair and balanced news, oh yea!!!!
It seems that all other european countries have this in in their front page news, not just arab news as the democratic american news are reporting....

Thats probably because most european countries are 100% biased against the war, and this tidbit of news has them jumping in glee.

are you saying you expected fox news to be Fair and balanced news?
If you don't want the slop, don't eat at the trough.

I'm sure the perpetrators will get at least two weeks KP duty. That is, the ones ranked sargeant or less. The officers will recieve a written reprimand. The families of the soldiers involved are defending this as just "pranks" by "kids". The wife of one of the soldiers who is charged said "well, those prisoners could have been misbehaving". Its amazing how the rights we say we stand for only seem to apply to us and only here. (sometimes).

nahh..i was being sarcastic... Since that network reports fair and balanced news, i really wanted to see how fair they were, as i see a lot of cubes at work tuning in to to this site to get 'real news'; no wonder ignorance reigns supreme 🙂

And about another earlier response saying that europeans are biased....well, biased or not, i would think this news is a big story, specially since one of the goals was to supposedly liberate iraq of the evils commited by mr. hussein.... of course, such news is not so favorable to the president so is best to keep it in the closet....

At least they're doing something about it.

Anyways, something idiotic like this should be expected. It's not like the soldiers (on average) there are the brightest people...

Sorry, but I don't live in some sort of sugar-coated world.

The average soldier is most likely not very intelligent. This isn't a job that requires a high intelligence.

While I do agree that the average soldier isn't necessarily the brightest out there, but it should be apparent to anyone that beatings, humiliation and urination on others is wrong -- even to the dumbest bunch of soldiers we have.

True, but some of these people are probably so stupid that they thought it would be OK in a prison....they probably thought they could get away with it.

I'm sure that this would have happened with any military. And I'm sure that more idiotic things have been done by other militaries before.

How does stupidity have to do with the malice one has? Some of the world's most notorious killers of all time are geniuses. Eddie and Teddy just to name two.
These people need to be shot in the face.

His comments sicken me.

Frederick says he didn't see a copy of the Geneva Convention rules for handling prisoners of war until after he was charged.
Frederick also says there were far too few soldiers there for the number of prisoners: ?There was, when I left, there was over 900. And there was only five soldiers, plus two non-commissioned officers, in charge for those 900 -- over 900 inmates

He should obviously be shot in the face for justifying it.

Soldiers always do horrendous things all throughout history. I knew things like this would happen. Despicable.

I understand how people worship and put soldiers (and police officers, teachers, etc.) on pedestals, but to pretend that they're PhD candidates is pretty funny.

since when is al-qaeda rational enough to require real-world abuses, however few and isolated they may be, to justify their islamist campaigns of mass murder ?

osama, zawahiri, zarqawi et al are gripped by delusions of american imperialist genocide that make these photos harmless anatomical studies for art students. al-qaeda is demented to the core; no need to impart commonplace motivations to their crimes.

I disagree. We have to assume those leading Al-Queda are rational in their own f'ed up way. By not understanding the motivations of our enemy we cannot effectively defeat them. Thinking them just murderous bloodthirsty animals serves our cause no justice.

al-qaeda being 'rational in their own f'cked up way' means they're irrational, pathologically so. there is no difficulty understanding what they they want to do. they've demonstrated that amply. al-qaeda has published their thoughts if you're still unsure about their motivations. they're very un-mysterious-like. the true difficulties lie with the good folk - prediction, anticipation, and counter-measures.

'thnking them just murderous bloodthirsty animals' is complementary and serves as rhetorical decoration to our determination to see to their extermination.

Well, I don't condone this sort of thing, but much of the "torture" was of the hazing variety. Let's keep things in perspective here. They should be punished and probably will get harsher than normal punishment because this is some of the best anti-war propaganda possible. The irony and paradox is that we should thank the soldiers for doing this to those prisoners. Ultimately, the harsh treatment they received will result in an earlier withdrawal of U.S. troops and will save lives on both sides. This mistreatment is just another dagger in the back of Bush's Iraq policy. How many more can it sustain?

As a member of the military the pictures are pretty vile. I?m not in the military expecting to earn money. I did not enlist expecting to kill people. I?m there to do a job. Sometimes it?s a downright sucky or dangerous job. Many things with the military inherently involve risk. Sad fact is that it is made even worse by people like those that are in those pictures. People who are like that are the ones that shirk their duty and decide not to follow orders only to end up getting others hurt or killed because they can?t follow simple rules. Planes crash, accidents happen, people get shot.

The idiots who posed for those pictures have, as sure as anything, caused the deaths of more service members. It was a morally inexcusable act.

The people who did those acts to the Iraqi prisoners are us. In them we see ourselves. We will act just like them in the same circumstance. Each of them had the need to humiliate others to feel better him or herself. It is because we hate ourselves that we act like animals. It does no good to pretend that those people aren't us. The are us as sure as we breathe. You cannot escape your truth by running away. To deny is to scape goat which is exactly what was going on. Always it is the other who is worthless. The other is the you you won't see, the one who hates you as enemy, your hidden self.

True.. no one thinks of themselves as an evil person. Hitler by this definition was on a higher moral ground than those yahoos in the pictures. Hitler held allot of justification and reasoning behind his horrendous actions after all.

The people in those pictures did what they out of unadulterated spite, malice, perversion and simply because they could.

Guess what, kids. We got ourselves a war. There are individuals out there that think all rules are suspended for the duration. The mindset of some soldiers is, "fvck it! These a-holes killed my buds, and I'm gonna make 'em pay."

What justifications did Hitler give?
