Apt-X bluetooth audio

Some companies like Creative have come up with Apt-X, which is supposed to deliver superior audio over bluetooth compared to the regular codec. Something about lossless, 24bit/96hz is supported.

Now, it seems that not all devices support it. For instance, the iphone will not transmit audio over bluetooth in Apt-X.

They do sell dongles for Apt-X.

But okay, theoretically, on a pc or mac, you should be able to install apt-X codec software and use it on an existing bluetooth connect, right?

the BT audio stack you are using has to implement that codec. i think as long as your BT adapter supports using the BT data channel it should hardware wise support it. thats why the iphone doesnt support it, the chip on it could send it but apple hasnt implemented apt-x on the iphone's BT stack

i have a creative labs D200 which supports it. you have to have both sides support it. i know a lot of android phones do (my droid razr m does) so it just uses it when it connects to that particularly speaker.

i'm guessing during the BT pairing process the protocol has the devices tell each other what they support.

all BT speakers and phones and such support the much worse SBC codec which is based on mpeg 1 level 2 audio.
