Apps selecting themselves on taskbar

I've noticed that some apps in Windows will bring themselves to the front when they're done with what they're doing (painting a webpage, opening a document, etc.), and it's really getting on my nerves. For example, I'll click a link in one pane of a browser, then click on the taskbar button of another pane to switch, start filling in form information, and before I know it, the original pane is in front of me, and I'm entering information into the wrong window. This will happen between browser windows, between Office App windows, between a browser and an Office app - you name it. I've seen it happen in Win98 and WinNT, but haven't really played enough to have seen it in WinXP, but I suspect it's still there.

Anybody know of a way to turn this off (in any version of Windows), such that the only task switching that happens is directed by me alone?

This annoys me too when I use Windows. Its also crept up in Mozilla on my Mac :/

But I havent seen it *AT ALL* in Win2k. Only a small amount of good news, but good news none the less 😉
 
That is good news, and since I've seen it on NT but it's absent from 2K, hopefully it was permanently fixed for XP as well. It still would be nice to know if/how to turn it off in 98 and NT, though. Anyone? Bueller?

The 'bring window to front' functionality was indeed changed for 2K/XP and Millenium. It might have made it into 98second edition, but I don't recall. Are you on 98original or 98se?

It does that on 98se. Or atleast it does that for me.
 
Yeah, 98SE does it. Glad to see it got fixed for 2K/XP, though. This, coupled with a friend's recommendation, might just be enough to convince me to upgrade my 98SE system to 2K (don't think it can handle XP). I've got so much stuff on that HD, though - will 2K install itself over 98SE without disturbing the HD data too much?
