Appropriate christmas present for a girl?

It just struck me that this is obscenely nerdy. I've been with this girl since mid-1999. I'm gonna be putting together a computer for her for Christmas.

I fully intend to pour my heart and soul into it until December 24th, when it will be completed. This machine promises to be a tower of power, featuring tasteful case lighting (Chieftec Matrix case with a soft blue CCFL behind the front panel, which is one GIANT grille), a modded optical mouse (Soft blue LED), a modded keyboard (blue LEDs), a modded monitor (More blue LEDs!), and everything colormatched to black. Top end Athlon, gig and a half of RAM, DVD burner, custom setup WinXP install with a custom theme, boot screen, and logon screen, one touch reimaging (All my work - I intend to make it unique in every way), and the entire machine will be air cooled - but very, very quiet. Everything else will be pretty standard stuff - 160 gig data drive, 80 gig boot drive, R9600, etc.

Am I going overboard? Or is this perfectly in line with what is acceptable? All the mods will be done tastefully (And with the assistance of my mother to help me determine just what is tasteful in the eyes of a female. Originally all the lighting was going to be red - apparently that's a no-no) and to her. This is going to be a complete surprise, and I've gone to great lengths to make sure that if she is able to spot me working on one part or another, that I'll have an excuse (I've reengineered my HTPC project to utilize some of the same techniques.

But for some reason, as I sit here with the credit card in my hand, all the items in my shopping cart, I can't help but wonder if this is going to be worth my life savings - not like she'll get it and then she'll leave me, but more like will she appreciate the work that I've put into the money for it, and then into the configuration itself? I doubt she'll think that I'm trying to buy her off - I can already get anything I want from her.

And before you ask - :camera: PIC!

My way is cheaper... Oh wait. Ohhhhhh. That's what you're talking about. Been there, done that. That gives me a sick and twisted idea though. I'll give her another one on Christmas and then tell her that's all she gets and keep up the act until after dinner. Mwahaha.

If she is really into computers then I would get it. If shes not, I would think something like a ring or neckless, etc.

Yeah give her one that afternoon and she can WEAR it to dinner. :Q

how old are you? and is she too a fellow computer geek? if so, then i bet she will appriciate it. I assume she is.. if not, i think you might need to look elsewhere 😉

Is she a super geek?
If not, I'd reconsider.
She might think it was nice of you, but I doubt most girls will really be into crap like case mods and blue LED's.

yeah, sounds to me you wanna do this just cause you'll be able to use the PC 🙂
my GF would like that, but.... kindof a weird gift for the woman.

She's into them to the point of being able to use them at the highest level - but as of yet she has no motivation to pick up some development skills, and no desire to understand them. I'm hoping that in one way or another, seeing a computer at it's finest will inspire her to take after me and make me feel like less of an ass when I trail off in conversation and start talking about hardware or programming or some other topic that she hasn't even begun to delve into.

Cool x-mas thread.. my friend likes this Jewish girl, and since they dont celebrate X-mas, what do you get a girl instead ?

My sentiments exactly. Will she appreciate all of this attention to detail and hard work or will she fire up a game of Solitaire and IM her friends on this uber machine?? If you simply want to give her a computer will a basic (and cheaper) model do just as well?

I've tried with my wife, but she just looks at me blankly and calls me a nerd.

Wait, mid-1999?

Aren't you two only 16 and 15 now?

WTF?

Yes. I'm 16, she's 15. She became 'mine' in 1999 when I beat up her 'boyfriend'. Funny story actually. But this isn't the time or the place.

Maybe you should just quit talking to your G/F about nerdy computer sh!t.

That's about the worst idea for a gift ever. You're giving her something she doesn't want. She does not want a custom computer. YOU want her to have one. You're building something that YOU like, not something that SHE likes. Didn't you see the episode of the Simpson's where Homer bought Marge a bowling ball? EXACT SAME THING.

bottom line is she will not appreciate it as much as you obviously will. And it sounds like you are a little sensitive about having her dig it, like you are setting yourself up for some grief. get something a little more personal, a little more warm. i love computers, but they are really nothing but appliances. would you get her a modded toaster?
