not using this as an excuse... but since I was born & raised in an east Asian culture where the guys aren't assertive, it makes things a little harder when the girl I'm pursuing is Americanized

Yup. That's how it worked with me, anyway. One day I concluded it just wasn't worth the effort and stopped trying. Not 2 weeks later the girl that prompted me to think that (so out of my league) was my gf.
