Applying Thermal Compound

How do I apply thermal compound? It came with my socket Tbird but I'm not sure exactly how to use it. Can someone point me in the right direction?
 
Simple, place a blob on the small central CPU slug (blue or green square, about 1/2" square) Squish it over the top of the whole blue/green area and then simply press the heatsink into place, as it will squeeze out any excess. Having a bit too much is much better than having too little.

I.e., don't use much - all you really need is a very thin layer. The idea is to just fill in the minute imperfections in the surface of the HS or chip. Too much may actually inhibit heat transfer.



 
with today's clips, especially with flip chip p3s nad durons/t-birds, it is very hard to put "too much". don't over do it, but realize that a little bit more is a lot better than having too little, as 2cool says.

The little bit extra will simply be squeezed out the side(especially if it is a high quality grease that isn't too thick).

Though it might not be Arctic Silver that you're applying, go to www.arcticsilver.com and read the installation of the thermal compound and reasoning behind correct application. It also helped to remove the Mobo from the case when doing so. You could use the light to see if the HSF is sitting on the Die correctly. Installation would be less of a hassle all the way around.
