Applying for $13/hour summer internship: What do you think of this resume? *Complete*

I am a first year Computer Engineering major at RIT and looking for summer employment for this upcoming summer. I already have a job lined up for about $7/hour working for the local school district near my home again this summer - that is great because I can work as many hours as I want and the time is completely flexible, plus virtually no cost of living. But, I am also looking into other options (yes i already accepted the position at the school again but money does talk I suppose... perhaps if I was accepted to this other job I could use it as a bargaining chip because they actually asked me to return)

Resume (keep in mind in 10 weeks I'll only have 1 year of college under my belt here): http://www.sbyers.com/resume.htm

The job is an internship with First Energy (office building part of a nuclear power plant near my home) and I am applying because one of the executives there has urged me to do so and will hand deliver my resume with his reccomendation. Not bad... I would be assisting other computer engineers there but I am unsure of other details except that I am assured this is not a "go make coffee and sweep the floors" job.

Suggestions? Comments? Should I leave all that stuff in my resume? And I've been poundering what to put on the cover letter... Of course I have that resume in word format without the web page background.

EDIT: update posted below...

eww... word resume wizard. I would put it in the trash -- shows lack of effort and no creative flair or passion for the work. 🙂

under education: please take out the "presumably" spring quarter... it just so ugh to me... so presumptious. some may like it because you set high goals for yourself. i've always seen a resume as a list of your accomplishments.

also under your high school, i'd change the "most difficult courses" to something like "graduated as co-valedictorian with a breadth of AP and honors classes" or something like that. "most difficult courses" could be "advanced farming" for all i know.

and yes, don't use resume wizards in word - those usually go in the trash first, BUT since you are getting a recommendation with yours it might just pass.

agreed with above post. If all else fails, use it. But go to a resume building workshop or ask some of the professors how to do one if you are close enough to them.

actually the layout and arrangement of it is pretty good. use tables in word to organize it instead of resume wizard. you have alot of good stuff on there, way more than i had when i was a freshman! if your name is already high on the list, i'd say you're a shoe-in for the job. just pick some different wording, as others mentioned. it's a bit too wordy and long. it's my opinion that a resume should be 1 page long, no more.

Because I wasn't actively looking for a job because I had one lined up this one took me by surprise and I need to have this resume wrapped up by some time tomorrow, hence the Word template.

Thanks for the suggestions.

BTW, do you think I should but my GPA on the resume? After the first quarter I had a 4.0. this quarter has just ended and I expect a 3.9 or so...

Yes, list your GPA -- else they assume it is low.

YES put that on there! jesus, why wouldn't you?

It's difficult to see the pagination on a web page, but you should make sure it fits on one page.

The font size looks a little small and the resume seems cramped. (I think making the margins smaller would alleviate this some.)

The use of bold and bulleted is a really good idea.

I've been told it is not always a good idea to indicate any kind of religious affiliation on your resume. I'm not sure how much it matters either way, but advisors at my school recommended against it.

You don't need to add the reference line. I'd get rid of it unless you need to fill up space (doesn't seem that you do). Obviously, if they ask you for references you will supply them.

You should also get rid of your personal interests, not really too relevant to the job. Wastes space.

You may want to combine the work experience at your high school to save a little bit of space.

After getting rid of the extraneous words, you can make the font size a little more legible. If the recruiter has problems reading your resume, they're not going to go to too much trouble. They should be able to scan your resume easily for any info they want (hence the use of bold is a really good idea, you will want to play with the formatting more at a later point in time when you have more time).

Hey fellow RIT'er! I'm also looking for a job for this quarter and I'm looking to update my resume for a Graphic design job...Now I gotta use search button and look up all the resume threads to see how i can make my Resume better

Well I decided to stick with the job with the school district because of the flexible hours, 8 minute distance from home, and awesome amount of responsibility (and likewise power) I get to have 🙂

After three years starting at the bottom would be painful, its nice to have people who you control. lol. j/k

but at least I got the resume hashed out

Add some of your hobbies and interests onto your resume- it'll make your resume a little more personal and it makes for good conversation- they'll probably ask you about that stuff if you get an interview.

For the cover letter, if you don't have the recruiter's name, GO LOOK IT UP. Ask that exec if you have to... it shows you're willing to put in the extra effort. Don't just use "Dear Sir or Madam" or "To Whom It May Concern".
