Applying AS5 to AMD 64 processor...

I was curious is it best when applying arctic silver 5 to amd 64 should i place a small amount at the center of the processor and put the heatsink on it and turn left and right and secure the heatsink. or should i use a credit card to spread the AS5 around the cpu?

I use the heatsink to squash it. I always check for proper AS coverage before I permanately seal it.

never credit card. stuff is to thick for that. i use my finger though so i can get even contact.

Well, unfortunatley I don't have an AMD64 🙁, but I have heard that they have a retaining clip which the HS sits in. In other words, I am thinking that you may not be able to twist the HS. If so, try the CC, I use one to spread my AS5. No prob for me.

I put my finger inside a clean plastic bag (like a sandwich bag) and smear a thin coat of it on the die of the CPU. Then install the cooler.

small dot of AS in the middle of the heatspreader, apply heatsink, wiggle it a bit, check the application, then lock it down for good.

I've never been a fan of the finger way (I hope all of you are covering your fingers with a plastic bag), as the flat open surface allows little air bubbles to get trapped. Also, I don't care for the way AS5 decribes of putting a dot in the center, because even if you put on the exact amount, not as much of the heat spreader gets covered, so you're losing contact surface. I've found the best way is modified AS5 version. Put the same 3/4 of a BB worth in the center, then about a cm out on all 4 corners put a little more (like 1/8 of a BB), so it looks like a "5" on the side of a dice. Then put the heatsink on and swivel and slightly rotate it to flatten out the paste. This way has reduced temps by 2C from other ways that I've used, and I feel it gives the best coverage without putting too much AS5 on or allowing air to get trapped.

well i just found a pack of box cutters. going to use the knife inside one of them to get a nice even layer on the cpu.

Yea, razor blade or rigid plastic like a 3 1/2 plastic insert from your case. Put some on CPU then spread it, then some on heatsink and spread it. Apply heatsink to CPU, Pull it off and check for "bald spots" of no contact, compensate, reapply.
