Applying AS5 Question!

Received my 3500+ Neo2 plat combo yesterday. I had rec. my xp-120 the day before. I took of the stock heatsink and took the the paste off which was a pretty thick layer of compared to the directions that AS5 says to apply with my new heatsink. So my Question is which method is the best and how do you know that you applied the AS5 correctly with just the circle like the AS5 pic shows?

Just apply a very thin layer of AS5 over the entire die, thats the proper way to do it[/

The die is what's under the cover? So if I have a circle of AS5 in the middle of the cover then I should be okay, correct?
