Nope. Wrong again. "Insufficient credit history" strikes again, this time from Texaco.

I'm never gonna get credit at this rate.

Nah, haven't tried there yet. I guess I could do that & use them to buy the 32" TV I want for my room...

[EDIT]My parents have made it clear they won't co-sign anything.[/EDIT]

Viper: Just remember every time you apply, it goes on your credit report, and makes a mark against it for a certain period of time. My hubby and I have been going through the same thing, I know how it feels.

I was lucky, for whatever reasons the banks just LOVE handing out free 300 dollar max credit cards to anyone who is a student. I was a part time student for a half semester and was able to get a credit card that way. As a small business owner i was denied a 500 dollar credit card, yet they changed my status to STUDENT in the profile and bang, 7 days later a new shiny credit card arrived.

Ive allready got offers in the mail from master card for a 2,500 credit card now.

When all else fails, get a secured card.

Capitol One will give you a credit limit of $200 against a deposit you make with them (up to $200). After a trial period of paying your bills on time, they will return the deposit to you.

Hmm...

A secured card sounds intriguing. I'll have to look into that. I want to start building excellent credit now, since I'm going to want to buy a house when I get married. If they won't give me credit any other way, I'll try that.

Viper you tried for a basic NextCard from nextcard.com already havent you? The first place to give me one was Citi bank, I applied online for it and got a $500 limit, I dont remember if i tried for a student card or regular. It doesnt say student so I assume its a regular one.....

Btw with a $700 card and 1 $600 card, I still dont have enough credit for a phillips 66 gas card hehe

I've tried Capital One, Texaco, & some place that called me because of my age (should be just going to college, & they wanted to give me "a card for college"). Got rejected on all three due to no credit history.

Watch out. Once you get a secured card, you will start to get lots of offers from other companies offering non-secured cards. :D It worked for me.

With Capitol One you will get a VISA or Mastercharge. That is the BEST way to get credit established - better than a gas card or Sears, jewlery store, etc.

Soy...

But did you have any credit history? I have zip. Unless a debit that doubles as a Visa counts, which I don't think it does.

Nope, well none they asked for (some cd's, saving and checking account, but they dont ask for any of that), and 30 seconds after I hit submit it told me I was approved so I'm sure its not a person reveiwing it.....I was 18 then I think...maybe 19.

Ohhh yeah if you try it, let us know how it went ;)

Viper GTS - I got my first credit card when I was 16 (18 years ago). It was a secured card. My bank (which I had been using for all my life at that point) wouldn't give me one so I pledged $500 from a savings account to get a card from another bank. Once I got the secured card, I took it to my regular bank and they gave me an unsecured card.

I got out of University at 20 and ran up my cards (some in University but mostly right when I started working - mainly on bars, clothes, and cd's). I literally spent a year and a half never going out and eating raman noodles and kraft dinner as much as possible to save money. I paid off the CC debt and have never had CC debt since then. I now charge 100% of purchases I can to my card (frequent flyer miles), but I always make sure I pay it when the bill comes.

Watch what you wish for and keep your credit limit as low as possible in the beginning. Use it, but make your payments.

Michael

ps - if Nextcard works, go for it. Try to have the lowest fee possible. The Frequent Flyer miles card is good for me because I charge $25K+ every year and that gives me one free ticket every year.

I went through the nextcard application, & I forgot... I already tried that one & got rejected. That makes 4 rejections, not three.

Nah, I'm not forgetting a zero. I don't remember whether I put $25,000 or $65,000 down for household income the first time, though, since I wanted to get it on my own income rather than mine & my dad's combined. Either way, I got rejected the first time & it was apparently less than 60 days go so they bounced this one as well.

First off have as much money in your checking/saving accounts... I was turned down solely because both were below $100. Also don't constantly apply... like GirlFriday said. I was turned down for an Exxon card... but just got my texaco one. I waited 3 months before trying for the Tex one, and had over $500 in both my bank accounts. I still can't get a Bestbuy card no matter what I do... turned down twice so far... even though I have excellent credit.

What about Target? I'm pretty sure they'll give a card to anybody. My first card was a Dayton Hudson card.

I spent a great deal of my life screwing up my credit. When I finally got my brains back where they belong, I had to figure out how I was going to start building a credit history for myself. I decided that I would begin by opening up a checking account, one that I could earn interest with. I maintained their minimum balance ($300) and used the checking account to pay all my bills, for a little over a year. Then, one day I got a CC application in the mail from Citibank, sent it in, and I was accepted! Totally blew my mind.:Q

Just lay off the credit card applications for awhile, open a checking acct. if you don't have one already, use it, maintain the min. bal., establish yourself by degrees.

Secured credit cards suck bigtime!!! -kd5-

Try college campuses around the beginning of the school year (now). There are usually many, many credit card booths trying to sign up new students. At the very least, you'll get all sorts of free crap if you don't get a credit card.

I made no money what so ever, and I was sent a flurry of pre approved cards once I hit 18. I called in about them, and got two activated, a Mastercard and a Visa, both with 1000 max limit.

Hows that for dumb luck :)

I got approved for my first card which had a $1,000 limit and no fee. I was like WHAT THE FSCK? I just got this spam mail at home and signed the application truthfully and mailed it in. I got the card, but immediately canceled it after 9 months because I wasn't using it at all.
