I just got a notice today about the job I applied for with my city. The notice says that I'm to take a written examination, but doesn't say much else. The application says something else though:

http://senduit.com/be24f4 (pdf file)

It talks about a "civil service examination" and then further down, there's a section that says, "You will be evaluated on your:". So is the test going to be on civil service or on the stuff under the "You will be evaluated on your:" section?

This is the first time I've applied for a job with the city. Oh, the notice also says that the exam should take around two hours.

its just a way to weed out the people who applied who don't actually know the skills relevant to the job. I've done a couple of these and its never anything that bad really - basic skills and knowledge.

Well, the application does first say it will be a civil service examination then it has that section after about things to be evaluated on.

You trying to say something?

What's wrong with you guys. I was just asking for some clarification here. Thought that maybe someone here had applied / worked for their city before.

Just more of the jack assy-ness that's been happening more often here I guess.

If you are a minority/woman, you'll have a much better shot regardless of your test score.

I am one of those.

I'm pretty confident I can pass a test based on things I need to know to perform what's needed of this position. I was just browsing the city website and did find a pretty large manual on civil service stuff so I guess I'll look over that.

Um...a civil service examination on the things it lists?

At least they told you that you were going to be taking a test. When I interviewed for a civil service job (ending up getting it), they sat me down for a test on the day of the interview. There was no mention of it beforehand. They just said come on in for an interview.

Basically, it was a free-response type deal. They asked me to type how I would handle some projects and print out my answers. So, basically they were just checking to see that I could write in complete sentence, have semi-lucid thoughts, use Word, and hit the print button.

These are usually really basic stuff to weed out the complete morons. Some of these city jobs can get hundreds of applicants and they have to use an easy objective method to get it down to a manageable number before they actually interview people. I took one for a dispatcher position once, and it was super self-explanatory and easy. I got to the interview (though I didn't get the job).

If you have a brain you'll do okay. If you're fairly smart then you'll ace it. Most jobs I've had have required such things, I applied at ICBC (insurance company for all of BC) and had to take several tests. They weren't that hard, I apparantly did well because they offered me a job, but I had already accepted something else :(

I applied for a basic summer job with the city as a receptionist, had to take an "exam" on customer service. Pretty basic. I think there were 40 people writing it, only 20 got hired. As long as you know the proper/politically correct answer, you should be good to go.

Took the exam yesterday. The first half of the exam was on customer service. The second half was on the tech. stuff. 50 questions total. There were around 100 other people there taking this same exam for the same position though.

you will be evaluated on what it says you'll be evaluated on... it's not an exam about civil service... although i guess technically it is because what you're being evaluated on is probably civil service duties, but the title of the exam is "civil service examination" which just means it's an examination for those wanting to enter civil service... i'm sure it's an easy test, you've seen those civil service employees...
