Appliance experts - Damaged GE profile cooktop repair

I managed to chip my GE Profile glass cooktop (PP962) last night after removing a salt block that had somehow gotten stuck. I didn't even notice any resistance as I lifted the block, but it managed to take a 1" round section of the glass approximately half the thickness of the total depth right in the center of the burner.

My thought is that I can replace the glass, but I have grown old of the stainless steel. I found a place that sells the black version of the glass online. Is it possible to swap the glass with another color? It looks like everything lines up.

Side question, anyone have access to the repair manual? I haven't pulled up the cooktop to check the mounting, but I suspect it's just a few screws holding the glass down.

On another note, do you have gas available? If so, I would suggest going to a gas cook top unless you are absolutely attached to the glass.

I would like to move to gas but we are talking about moving in the near term so we want to not invent much into wants vs just getting the house staged.

Gas cook top should increase value of your house. Just a thought.

Other than that, it looks like a pretty simple process to replace the glass.

As much as I love my gas cooktop that replaced my ***#^% glass cooktop I still get the impression that more buyers would rather have the glass (because a kitchen is jewelry, it's supposed to look good, but you don't really use it for anything)

Which also makes me wonder about the change from stainless. As you know, stainless is just a different finish, but most buyers now think stainless = reliable and black = broken.

That's true too. SS is also $800 to replace, black is $400ish.

Ouch! I think I paid about $400 for my gas cooktop (floor model at Menards) ...but it's black because I don't plan on moving anytime soon.

I'd seriously consider the black for that difference.

i'd probably just opt for an induction cook top vs converting to gas if it cannot be repaired. You get the look the posers want, but real cooks will still have something worthy of cooking on

....those posers. I almost refuse to get stainless appliances out of spite. I had one of those glass cooktops when I moved in and put up with it for a year... I was very happy to run a gas line and make the switch back to gas in my current house.

Just a thought, will you have to replace the knobs too? I'm thinking you will if you want to go with the monochrome look. In other words, I don't think knobs come with the replacement top.

Well I ended up switching to gas. I had a plumber come in and run a new line to the cooktop and to my in-wall oven as it was an old copper run. I installed the new GE Cafe last night and had a chance to cook with it. A much better experience than electricity.

That's definitely the way to go. The induction cooktops look nice, but I prefer gas to electric by far. I basically traded one of my AR-15s for a gas range 4 years ago. It was sooo worth it.

I know beating a dead horse here, which everyone on the internet does. But the OP had an electric cooktop. Induction while it looks similar, is different. I love my GE induction cooktop.

I know induction is different. I was saying my opinion is gas > induction > electric...then the jury is out on whether a ceramic/glass top is better than coil. Both of them have their problems with hotspots and performance.

I was happy to ditch my electric ceramic range when I ran gas lines to my current kitchen and go back to gas.

I am in no way going to get into a gas versus induction versus electric debate. I was more referring to the fact that the OP was fixing an electric cooktop. Then you referenced induction and then referenced electric. Just did not want others to get confused between induction and electric.
