AppleTV + Perian = neato

what about all the Netgear and Linksys media streaming devices. Those can do all that too.
what all these things lack is DVD .img support which will never be supported out of the box. Sadly THAT is the holy grail of media centers and will never be supported by any manufacturere and will always be a hack or open sourced project.

Thanks is why I stick with my XBMC for now.
BUt I'm missing HD content.... someday there will be a XBMC360 and all will be right with the world

The big plus right now is that the APpleTV box not only runs OSX10.4.4, but it also doesn't have any features that deter modding....it's a hobbiests wet dream...

I really fail to see what it offers for anyone who already has a homebrew dvr, especially when you can build a dvr with a larger drive, HD capabilities, and as many tv tuners as you can fit in.

ok point(s) taken
please PM me when it supports .img file and I will be 3 right there and then 🙂
( remember I got you on IM 😛)

I believe there are a few media streamers that can support dvds ripped into ISOs or to Audio_TS/Video_TS but most are from overseas. Support for other formats vary though and usually a hit or miss on each video file depending on how they were originally encoded. Also the UI of most of these streamers are just a simple directory tree type view so no searching or sorting available.

I just built a Vista MC and so far it's able to play most of my videos including a few h.264 and .ts HD files. The UI looks nice and easy to use.

Well it is just a super small PC (Intel CPU and Nvidia GPU) so all you need are the proper codecs preinstalled.

that plays h.264@ 720p and costs 299?

No 1080p..... Thats what keeps me from buying it right now. Yes there is little difference between 1080i vs 1080p but there is a difference and my TV is big enough for me to tell 🙂

I prefer a standalone DVD player with PAL capability for any DVD. But I'm not concerned about HD from the DVD player.

Easily. A modded Xbox doesn't do HD, has no component/HDMI connectors, and no WiFi.

I'll be watching this development closely. This would be a lot better than my D-Link DSM-520.

Hmm. So I've got a modded Xbox currently that plays video streamed over the network (stored on my PC). Can I still access all my UPnP or SMB shares?

If that's still doable, the bump to allow HDTV content might make this actually worth it...

wonder what the noise factor is like.

it does seem like a potential option for some neat setups... maybe a huge PVR in the basement where the noise won't bother anyone and AppleTV's in the kitchen, bedroom, and living room pulling files off the pvr.

cnet has used it and said no noise factor, since there isn't even a fan inside. gets hot, but no hotter than a laptop.

also, would this perian thing allow one to stream a DVD that is stored as an iso?

IE --> I ripped my dvds to an iso and my modded xbox can read them.

The box would be useless if it didn't do this, so I'm going to say yes.
I most certainly would not assume that if I were you...

The MS HD pack provides component and optical outputs.
It does support HD to 1080i but the CPU is not powerful enough so it drops frames.
Also, streaming HD and current WiFi speeds are not exactly compatible.
