Apples new Airport Extreme WIFI AC.

I'm debating about this or the ASUS RT-AC87U Wireless-AC2400. I'm tempted by Apple's simplicity; however, I do like the ability to configure and mess with DD-WRT

I've setup both & I like the Asus stuff a lot better myself. Easy browser access (vs. having to use Apple's setup assistant app), lots of configurability, VPN in, etc. Plus you can use Time Machine with the Asus:

The new Apple router does look cool though, so if you're using it as a display piece, that's nifty. Although the Asus looks like the batwing (it's freakin' HUGE) - it's no sissy Linksys paperback-sized router haha.

Holy crap. If ASUS now supports Time Machine, then I am sold. (I moved out of a place where we used a RT-N66U router - needless to say, it was great!)

The antennas are monstrous but I do plan on getting a directional antenna add-on and point it outside the window to pick-up signal outside, if anything. It is a bit pricey but I like the fact that it's AC-ready and that it's top-of-the-line, so I suspect it will have no bottleneck issues handling a 105mbps broadband connection, whilst acting as a VPN/file-sharing/printer-host/Obi-VoIP/HD-streaming all-in-one with exceptional QoS and load-balance management - without the need to build a power-efficient atom-based HTPC/pfsense server.

However, we currently don't have any products that offer 802.11AC wireless connectivity, so I am still a bit torn. Though, I'd rather not invest in 802.11N tech while I can, especially considering we have a 105Mbps broadband connection (it saturates our NETGEAR WNR1000 v2 router at 25-30Mbps via wireless)- and I don't have an ultra-fast "gaming" desktop to utilize the speeds over a 1 GigE ethernet connection.
