Apple's death grip on the portable MP3 market

Most people aren't experts in electronics. When you dumb something down enough, it because easy enough for the general population to use. At that point, market acceptance comes in. Apple did everything right:

1) Made devices look nice and easy to use (one control pad does everything)
2) Made a brand name for itself
3) Made them available at all major stores
4) Got in early enough to make the name iPod = MP3 player
5) Made iTunes easy enough for grandma to download songs at a decent price

The closest competitor to Apple at this point is Creative, and their MP3 players are superior, but they have a few flaws with their implementation:

1) Nobody outside the PC world knows who Creative Labs is
2) No advertising
3) No easy to use software to transfer music
4) No branded music store

For these reason, Creative's players will only be accepted by the electronic savvy, not the masses. The only companies that have the resources to counter Apple would be SONY and Samsung, but they don't seem to have any plans to do so.

I use my PSP as my MP3 player and it's earbuds are white. *shrug* It works for what I need (something to listen to on the 15 minute walk from the parkinglot to campus).

Nothing comes close to the Nano. It's that simple.

Yep that plus the simplest interface of any player out there.

The sound quality is average but you dont really notice that until you listen to something better.

Mp3 players have been out forever but Apple is the first company to make it useable, just like what Nokia did with the cellphone.

I got a nano for christmas. It's neat, but I don't use it. Why? I'm too sensitive to sound to use ear buds or headphones, and I can't afford a $99+ radio with dockstation for it. I want an FM modulator, but I tried to use the ones at the Sharper Image (got GF for Christmas). One isn't compatible with the nano, the other (roadtrip) is a piece of crap that won't work. Anyone know of any FM modulators that work well? There isn't a tape deck in the car, so it's FM modulator or nothing.

There are a couple that just use a 1/8th inch jack for input and work OK. The Belkin Tunecast II works pretty well and is self contained. It can be used with anything that has an earphone output. Performance will sux using anything that limits you to FM bandwidth.

The car doesn't have any jacks either, it's the factory radio that comes with the car. It really IS a modulator or nothing 🙁

I use my Ipod Nano to play the drums alongside my favorite tunes. This Nano has the best sound and loudest sound of any MP3 players I have tried.

IMO, creative stinks. It is always following in the footsteps of the Ipod, comming up with the same thing and then adding FM and a microphone. If it never came up with an ultra sleep MP3 player until the Ipod. It never had video support on its MP3 players before the Ipod.

Here's why I buy Creative:

1. FM Tuner - My health club broadcasts different channels of music over FM, so we don't all have to listen to the same garbage. I would not buy an MP3 player without FM.

2. Microphone - I keep short notes to myself on my MP3 player. I work on a 6 building campus, and it's the easiest way to take notes when I'm walking between buildings.

3. Better audio components.

4. Drag and drop - no extra software is required. Sure, you can install Creative Media Source, but it's a horrible program and it's not necessary.

5. Apple dumped firewire support. The ONLY reason that I had been considering the iPod video and held off on the Creative Zen Vision. When Apple ditched Firewire, they threw away one of the best things their players had going for them.

Also, Creative had PMD's out well before Apple announced the iPod video. Check your facts.

Best FM modulator around is a $17 one in the auto section of your local Wal-Mart. I can't remember brand but I know it started with an S and the packaging is white. You must get the one that plugs into the headphone jack because the other one sucks. One caveat is that it only works on 88.1,.3,.5, and .7 so if you have a lot of activity on that range it might not be for you.

Don't forget easily changeable battery, better battery life, and Outlook Calendar support.

Yeah, I did understand that. Try the Belkin. It is the best unless you get the Apple one and I haven't used the Apple one for the nano. I have the Apple one for my 40 gig IPOD and it works well.

cause you can't listen to a fcking mp3 without an ipod?

actually lots of podcasts are starting to come in enhanced formats that can only be listened to by apple's players.

I have not been impressed by anything from Dell, Creative or any others my coworkers have bought in their attempt to find a better deal than the ipod. Ipod just has the look and interface.

Their death grip is simple, they make the best products and they are not as overpriced as the once were.

Find me a personal video player that holds 30gb for under $300.

It lasts for about 2 hours... Hardly what I'd call "worth it"...

My only beef with iPod is that Apple's marketing blitz was successful to the point that to the average joe sixpack now believes that iPod is synonymous with an MP3 player. My wife asked for an iPod for Xmas. Do you want an IpOD? or do you just want an MP3 player?

She just wanted an MP3 player.

I got a Rio Karma. It's too bad Rio dropped the ball on build quality and marketing, because it is truly awesome.
So do you have a problem with Kleenex or Band-Aids too?

Just because something becomes a generalized trademark isn't a reason to hate it. Hate the effective marketing department.

Electronics is a very competitive market. As soon as something better, hipper, etc comes out, Apple will lose its "death grip" on this market segment.
