Apple support is terrible, and they only have a 14-day return policy (that you have to pay a restocking fee on) whereas you can get a Dell 30" for around $1750 with 3 year warranty and 30 day satisfaction guarantee on ebay from trusted sellers. The panels are identical, the apple just looks nicer. I just went through phone-support hell with Apple on a 23" Cinema display that I finally was able to return after it had been serviced twice, once without proper installation of the panel (they didn't screw it down all the way and it jiggled in the chassis).
I'd go for the dell unless you're buying a mac at the same time, then I'd get the Apple because you can get applecare to cover both for no additional charge (outside of the normal applecare fee). Apple support is pretty good if you get to the higher ups, but the low level tech support is really bad, just as bad as dell except you don't have the opportunity to return your product without a fee.
Edit: I would wager that Apple will also be announcing new displays within the next 12 months because Leopard is going to ship with resolution independence built in, which means that they can satisfy everyone by selling a higher dpi screen than the competition. I don't expect them to upgrade their interfaces though (i.e. to hdcp or the 2008 universal display connector standard-forget the name), because it would kill support for dual booting with Windows.
The new Mac Pro's are awesome though, and actually very cheap (I'm talking cheaper than you can build one, even without buying an OS) if you're a developer.
