Played at the NY Islanders arena (scored, and sat in the box for 2 mins too!). Once in a lifetime opportunity, and the ref took multiple group pics. Of course he texts it to our team captain who texts it to the rest of us. Of course Apple compresses the images/videos to shit when sent through iMessage or whatever it is. Can barely make out our faces. Their expensive-as-shit phone churns out 67kb 800x600 pictures for sharing which are barely presentable even on a small phone screen. And we cannot find the guy who took them originally. One of the many reasons Apple sucks. If this is an option and that's their default setting, they suck even more.

Not the first time I've had this happen (white-water rafting last time), but I'm not about to go explain this BS to people taking pics and sending them out every time.

Same thing happens when you text images on Android. Maybe not 800x600, but if quality is important, I share it via email instead.

Just tested this on 2 S9 phones on 4G. Came through as 408kb, 1296x1728. Completely clear.

There's a setting for that under setting. My wife and I exchange high res pics on iPhones all the time.

Apple should put a warning to their users when attaching media to texts that their shit won't send at high quality by default. The fact that people are still unaware probably means they've had to go back and forth on this until they can get quality pics to each other - a colossal waste of time. Apple was supposed to be about ease of use.

I've definitely seen this happen on my one group chat of 3. 2 of us have iPhones and other dude has a Samsung. Any time the samsung guy sends a video it's complete shit quality. Not sure about pics since we don't send many pics but I don't recall any being bad. So it goes both ways and I don't really know how to fix it.

I also think it only happened on his older phone. Do you have an older phone? Or maybe dude has an older Apple phone?

This is definitely pebcak.

ID-10t error? ;)

I have an s20 and I share video and pics all the time (with iphone users even!) .... have never had a problem so no doubt about the above.

To be fair however the "default" settings are garbage.

haha yes, sending videos over MMS is a sad joke. Photos are mostly acceptable, but everyone knows they've been downsampled from the original files.

And why is an iPhoner using iMessage instead of AirDrop? It's not even 100% clear if this is an Apple iMessage flaw since the photographer and his phone are unknown?

He said the first guy sent it via iMessage or whatever, so I assumed iPhone.

Also, you can't send stuff using iMessage if you are in a group chat with Android users, so the OP doesn't know wtf he's talking about, so def pebcak.

And since OP isn't on iPhone he can't use Airdrop. But yes, typically you want to exchange pics via airdrop after you take them, not hours later via a group SMS message lol.

I never said it was a group chat the ref sent it to. He sent it only to the captain. Read OP, pebcak!

Captain even sent the pics to me via email individually after I brought it up to him and it was still 67kb-ish suck quality so that's what he got originally.

I suppose he can reply to his original text and try to get them in better quality if still available, but at this point I've bothered him enough. Having to jump through these hoops is the bigger issue. Who wants shit quality pics in the first place? PEBAAA

OP said the ref took the photos, but they don't know even who the original phone owner is. Maybe it was a 2008 iPhone 3G. :p

I agree with you that it's user error, and the OP is incorrectly blaming Apple. As IronWing mentioned, this is probably the result of a non-default setting:

It's a really silly setting to even have in 2022. People are buying $1000 iPhones, but have to self-ration their data usage even against 1 MB images? :tearsofjoy:

That's the only way I send pictures.

The only apple stuff I've EVER bought grew on a tree (truth). Today I bought a 2 lb. bag of organic Gala apples at Trader Joe's. I ate one already, delicious! :D

Android phones are pretty much all getting onboard with RCS. Which can send higher quality MMS. Google kind of used their leverage to make the carriers get behind it and it seems they finally all cracked. I think maybe Verizon has a dream of their own texting standard, but in this case Google used strong arm tactics for a good cause.

It's up to Apple to open up iMessages or integrate it with RCS. But they won't. It's just not a good business decision for them, though it's great for the consumer.
