According to AnandTech's live stream, Apple is planning on ditching .jpg for .heic format in iOS 11. I've been coming up empty handed trying to find samples of the new format which is supposed to be supported in HTML 5. Anyone know where to find samples?

By ditching, I hope that means you can still use jpeg and optional heic. They tried the same thing with AAC for audio which never fully caught on, but never was able to use flac.

At first paragraph of technical description, I thought, "isn't this format exactly how BPG compresses?" Then, the description acknowledges BPG. So, Better Better Portable Graphics?

It's just a fanciful name for HEVC intraframe-only compression mode for static images, and full blown HEVC for animated ones.

So does this mean it's all hardware encoded and decoded as of iOS 11 and macOS 10.13? I mean on A8 and later, and Kaby Lake and later. I say Kaby Lake because the photos are 10-bit.

I believe JPEGs were all done in software, correct?
