Based on my experience, and the hundred or so others reading this, I'd say you've got a PEBCAK issue.

no....it's called windows refusing to update some stupid drivers thinking it can only use "microsoft digitally signed drivers"

sadly, the drivers it insists on using are sh!t

if there wasn't a lot of important data, i would format the hard disk and reinstall windows on there. or better yet, just install linux on there and save me a world of pain.

edit: ps, don't assume user stupidity on the first try. especially when the post comes from a unix guy.

I use both a Windows desktop and an Apple Powerbook, but if I had to consider another computer, I'd go with Apple.

Reasons:
1. OS X > XP
2. I'm sort of tired of building computers. I prefer a computer to be working in an optimized state after the setup. If I built my own Windows box, I'd have to install alot of software. If I bought a prebuilt Windows computer, I'd have to uninstall alot of software.

I've gotten to the point where I don't care about pushing extra speed out of a processor. I'd rather pay the premium for a faster CPU than to tinker with a computer dealing with heat issues, noise issues, and stability. Time is money, and I'd rather pay for convenience. Back when I first got into computers I enjoyed the hobby but I've outgrown it.

So, the "unix guy" is here to insist he'll have better compatibility with all the hardware out there than XP? The "XP guys" are running more disparate hardware and software successfully and solidly, than any "unix guy" could ever dream of!

I'd rather pay for convenience.

have you ever TRIED running windows on anything else then an x86 architecture? 😉

edit: one of my friend believe he can run windows off sparc hardware. however, that's with linux as the native OS, vmware installed with x86 emulation and windows in that virtual world. personally haven't tried it but it could work....

I hope you're joking. None of my four XP boxes crash. Last trouble I had was weeks ago when my son completely filled his HDD.

My son compiles CS maps among other things. Mine frequently is Decrypting and Shrinking DVDs simultaneously while I browse, edit in PhotoShop and print DVD covers.

When I first heard Apple was switching to x86 I wanted to try it. Since then I have had the chance to use a few friends apples and I don't care to try osx anymore. Every time I'm there he want to do something with it that he can't. I thought it was just supposed to work. Isn't that what apple sales people on?

One of them downloaded some episodes of the office from iTunes and was trying to get it to play on the tv. It took like 15 minutes to get the first episode to play. On my windows based network you could download a tv show on any computer and watch it on the media center immediately, no fudging with a keyboard or trying to get your computer out of standby or whatever the apple equivalent is. Media Center just works.

Also, another example is that another friend wanted to export a graphic to mya from photoshop. He messed with it for two hours and didn't get it. I don't know if it's possible, but is certainly doesn't just work like I would expect. He also tried downloading some torrent. I'm sure this is a matter of his computer not being setup right but safari saves the torrent to the desktop then you need to open whatever torrent program he uses and take care of that. On my Windows box I click the link and the download starts. It just works.

Last one is availability of software. He was trying to find something to use newsgroups. I don't think he found anything good after 30 minutes of searching. Thank goodness there is one windows notebook in that place.

Anyway, after many hours spent on a mac I have to say that it is a lot of hype. There are some good things like the application removal and install and some of the built in software is pretty good. XP will keep me just fine until Vista arrives.

I haven't used MacOS since 1998. It was a total POS then, crashing everytime I tried to use it in that god-forsaken computer lab.

I was on the Linux bandwagon for quite some time, but then Windows XP came out and it fixed most of the problems that I had with Windows.

I installed FreeBSD 5.0, but it had some kind of horrible problem with my hardware and the only solution I could find was "Yep, it's broken."

I reinstalled Linux a few weeks ago, but a power outage made it crap the bed in ways that boggle the mind, so it's gone now.

I'm going to go with Microsoft for home computing.

I am sorry, but I do not see the point in purchasing a software package to run emulated games under Linux when I could just run Windows.
