Why do you think that? They would have to change A LOT of things in order to move in that direction.

BSD is unix, not linux.....c'mon folks this is a tech forum.

Thats like saying a mustang and a corvette are the same becasue they both have 4 wheels, a internal combustion engine and they both can drive on the same roads. Different company, far different historys, with their own seperate engines (unix is decades older too)

Name recognition and reputation with the Consumer. Add in that WinXP compatibility will allow all shortfalls of Macs/OS-X to be worked around, and Apple will win big time. The iPod will propel Mac sales, because the Consumer will associate the 2 and more Consumers own iPods than they do Dell PCs.

Do NOT install this on a core duo imac. I lost my Mac file system by trying to install it, currently waiting for a response in the Apple forums.

I'm not going to buy an expensive proprietary system just so I can run OS X and Windows.

can't you do that with virtual pc?

Meh, I just think there is, and will be for a long time, a very, very small % of consumers who want two OS's. Compared to Dell, Apple is small, at about a quater of the revenue Dell pulls in, and they've been around a lot longer than Dell. I see them as two completely different computer companies with different goals in mind.

If Apple wanted to think big, they'd sell their Mac OS for x86 systems, not just their small market computers. They don't want to compete with Microsoft, and if you look at their pricing/products, you'll see they don't want to compete too much with Dell either.

Don't get me wrong, I do not dislike Apple, they make a quality product and support it well. I wouldn't buy one, but I'm not the guy they market to either.

"It makes the Mac the most versatile computer on the market," said Tim Bajarin, a tech industry consultant at Creative Strategies.

Dual booting allows it to become versatile?!?! How long have pcs been dualbooting Windows and *nix!

Well I'm not buying. :D

I'd rather run Linux anyways (someday).

Start now ;) Else it is like any other thing where "someday" you'll do it. Do the dualboot, and slowly begin your adjustment. Ubuntu is very nice...and its June Dapper Drake release (I'm using the beta) is far superior to the current Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger (in terms of polish thus far..and it still has something like 2-3 months to launch)

I tried. It was an absolute nightmare trying to set up my wireless card.

No, triple booting ability does. Mac OSX, Windows XP, and Linux can all boot on an Intel Mac. Try that on yer Dell...

No. :D (and yes, I have a Dell)

I don't have any need for Linux nor Mac OS. Like a majority of consumers, Windows is just fine, I don't need anything else, and neither offer anything for me, at least nowhere near enough for me to even consider trying them. Now, Linux is free and that is a plus in it's direction, but I cannot say that for Mac OS. I will say that both have forced MS to make a better OS, and that is, and has been, a good thing for all consumers.

With such massive production, Dell is able to sell systems FAR below what Apple can do, and they don't pay much for Windows. IMO, the best bang for your buck in the PC market is Dell "refurbs." :D

eek broadcom? Check out OS and ask for help maybe...Drag had stated that until very recently wireless absolutely sucked because of a lack of support.

Technically....you can ;) While the methods can be questionable, OSX can be installed on a dell machine ;)

You and I don't disagree at all - I usually have friends and family order Dell refubs including their notebooks. But Tim B's comment was "this makes the Apple the most versatile computer on the market" - not the most cost effective, not the one that most people should own - the most VERSATILE. And being able to boot those three OSes is incomparable right now. The current version of MS Office for OSX is actually a more feature-rich office package than Office for XP, and despite gains Windows STILL doesn't quite compare in application software for multimedia to OSX - and until Vista comes out, OSX is a nicer OS to use. If you want to run games or non-OSX applications you can always boot into XP. And if you want to do some serious programming, use a pletora of command line tools, or re-create your environment from work then boot into Linux. THAT is versatile...but I do admit that few people need it, and most will be happily satisfied with a Dell or similar. (But this is an enthusiast website...)

My brother and his partner have a fully networked 5 Mac household (for music production mostly) which has impressed me, and I probably have $7,000 in applications (paid for btw) for Windows. At my next machine purchase I will seriously look to buy a Mac...
