 if those start at MSRP $1199. If you can get a Snow Leopard drop in cpu disk and one of those back to school iPod combos, seems like a great deal!

Also kind of chuckling because just saw a Microsoft laptop hunter ad where they said shopper couldn't find a Macbook Pro for under $2000 and bought some Dell for $971.

edit: any word on LED backlit display too, hopefully? (edit again: just realized that only white one didn't have LED backlit display already?)

The 13.3 and 15.4 models are suppose to have "upgraded" screens, whatever that means. I hope that means they've switched to IPS or MVA panels but I'm not holding my breath. I am glad however that Apple is still sticking with the 16:10 aspect ratio.

I for the life of me don't understand what Apple has against user-replaceable batteries. The 17" was bad enough, but now they're neutering the rest of the line too?

And where the sam hell did the ExpressCard slot go on the 15" model? It's like Apple never, ever wants you upgrading these things. It should be considered a miracle you can even replace the RAM.:|

The price drop is nice though.

I'd say pro, assuming the screen is better. That screen -- or at least the one on the 15" Unibodies, and I'd imagine it's just as good [and may even be better since they said "upgraded" screen -- is amazing.

Also, if you qualify for educational pricing, you can get it for $100 cheaper, and get an iPod touch...not sure if the whitebook qualifies for that.

Really debating on selling my 2.0GHz unibody Macbook for one of the newer ones. Silly I know but I should still be able to get a good price on my current Macbook.

No brainer, get the 13" MBP unless you can't afford it.

I'm wondering about this as well, was not expecting this update but should have suspected something when the MacBook white was refreshed.

I wonder when these will be available in stores - right away or what? I will buy one of the $1,499 13"-ers ASAP.
Should be pretty much right away since the online store says shipping within 24 hours.

Already up on the website. Dunno about B&M stores. What does apple do with its unsold stock of the older revisions? Discount them I assume? Sell them in the website clearance section? (I've never seen a clearance section at a B&M).

Anyway, I'm stoked. Hopefully I get my promotion and pay raise, and I too will be planning on getting a $1499 13"-er (I love that size for a laptop).

It seems like they sell the old models through resellers - MacMall often has deals on old models, and I don't recall ever seeing an old (non-refurb) model on the Apple site.

Yeah, for me 13" is really the sweet spot in terms of size. I am one of those people who nearly always has my laptop open while I'm watching TV or just hanging out. I find a 15" machine a little unwieldy, and a netbook too small. Sounds like the 13" MBP may have the (awesome) screen from the Air, and it is coming out just as my old MB is flaking out, so it's perfect timing for me . . .

Worth the upgrade for the SD card slot alone.

This is good for my work, because now we can afford to buy me a 15inch MBP instead of a 13inch macbook. So I get a better work computer at the same price. Personally though I'm glad I bought my macbook pro before this change. I am still not a believer in the non-replaceable battery. Plus I actually use the express card for a external SATA connection. I have no use for SD slot.

Luckily by the time I need a new notebook either the batteries will prove themselves or they will go back to the old way.

I am very interested to see what the real-life battery tests are like when it comes to the 13" MBP and the old aluminum 13" macbook

P.S. Does the educational discount giving you a free ipod touch only work if you are a college student? That is what it seemed like on Apple's page...

How many laptop batteries do you typically go through

I am still on my original and have a 2007 MBP and my capacity is fine

Yes, but it seems that they base it on the honour system... You can go to the educational store, input your school and get the educational discount.

I still have and use a 2003 12" PowerBook. It's on battery #3.

And I should add, I'm a couple of hours from the nearest Apple store. I don't think the local authorized shop can do those kinds of replacements

I love they they made the very nice and very recently updated 13 inch macbooks completely obsolete by doing away with the line completey --- just like that no more macbook line, only pros. WOW

btw, can someone explain to be what makes the new 13" macbooks pros a "PRO" as opposed to the recent aluminum 13" macbook that was refreshed not so long ago? To me the pro was for a bigger screen, higher screen resolution, etc. Now what it is besides a name?

Huh?

They reclassified the 13" unibody as a Pro. They added an SD card slot and firewire port. Got a faster CPU and a lower intro price.

The Macbook (Non Pro) still exists. The whole line, though, is just the recently updated white plastic Macbook. It still has firewire. There is no unibody Macbook now, just a Pro.

OMG. The lowest end Macbook Pro is now $1099 w/ education discount. I paid the SAME DAMN PRICE for my refurb 13" unibody shortly after launch.

Hmmm..... my fiancee might be getting a gently used Macbook.
