Apple thinks its iPad is the shizz, better than a Netbook my rear

ipad has $15/month wireless internet, your netbook has $59/month wireless internet. for that reason, many people will buy ipad instead of netbooks

Actually $30, the $15 internet is too limited. And that means you have to pay $630 instead of $500 for a puny non-expandable 16GB of storage. 16GB is seriously limited! The photos and video I took on my last trip to Japan is 12GB already. And they couldn't include a USB port so I can attach a portable enclosure if needed. No, they want you to buy the 64GB version instead if you want more storage, and that's $830.

I think the iPad is dumb, but a lot of consumers are even dumber so it'll still sell. To me if Apple adds Wacom and a pen to the tablet at its current price I'll actually want one, those Lenovo X200Ts are just too expensive!

Exactly, through the app store.
Apple couldn't claim to have 94% of app store "sales" without the free apps, nor could they claim billions of apps etc.

Free brings in traffic. Plus the developers have to pay anyway just to get their app on the app store, free or not, AFAIK (although it's only like $100).

There are also free applications available via Rock and Cydia.
Not really sure what your point is.
There are plenty of 3rd party package managers.

dumb... is expecting it to do things that were never intended. if it were for storing your raw camera images they would have done all the things you asked and ....gave you a freaking macbook air. oh wait that costs quite a bit more doesn't it😛

its not for uploading gigs of camera images, thats ridiculous thing to do with a light usage device. its for light app/browser use and some entertainment purposes. if you can access the web who cares about you having 12gb for pictures. its totally missing the point. its not like you can upload that 12gb through 3g anyways.

Not making any decisions until I try one out.

Also looking forward to Notion Ink Adam.

Anyone have release dates for both?

Agreed - why would I buy a 16g giant tablet PC that doesn't even fit into my digital camera's sd card slot?

ugh talk about weeks late to the party, shouldn't your rant have been in one of those first threads on this?

the point of the ipad is as an at a moment use device, whip it out and its on and ready. that is not the same at all with your netbook which is as much trouble to use as a laptop. and you will always think twice before whipping that out.

lol the j00j00's last announced price was 499 i believe😛 so much for 199. if you are so poor you need every level of connectivity for your sh*t netbook even if it does it all poorly then frankly the ipad isn't for you😛 ipad owner most probably will have a real laptop or desktop that will do those things correctly, and won't have to rely on some half assed tech like a netbook to do such things.

No, this is about iPad vs Netbook and the retardedness of Apple's COO, rather than just iPad suckage, which admittedly is Canon.

that's what a netbook costing $300 can do right? Or if Apple adds a SD slot and a single USB port then problem solved. Of course problem with that is ppl will only buy the 16GB version.

The iPad is not a just a freaking "light" web browser, alright. It's not like if it can get you online and it's worth $600+. Its other main uses would be for showing your photos and playing videos on the nice screen. If I come back from a trip first thing I do is move the photos and videos to a portable enclosure (I think most ppl would do the same). Now let's say your friends want to see your photos (ps I don't shoot raw, just 13mp jpgs) and they are meeting you somewhere like SB or a nice sandwich place, with a netbook all I have to do is put the enclosure in my pocket and go, with the iPad... you see where I'm going.

I really dislike Apple marketing because I think they play off the idea that most of the consumers are dumb and believes whatever Apple shoves at them. Non-expandable storage, no USB port, no pen support to do anything accurate, outdated aspect ratio screen, no flash, crappy smartphone OS... they still manage to make a lot of ppl believe it's like the best thing ever, amazing.

you mean the joojoo? the name is enough for me to not want to use it.

No, the Crunchpad as originally envisioned, not what it became. At $499 it's of no interest. I'll wait to buy a pad until they hit the price and functionality I want. And that's a hell of a lot less than either the j00j00 (or whatever the hell it is) and the iPad. They're either expensive or don't do what I want from a pad.

I want something that I can buy a few of and just leave around the house for using web apps wirelessly and conveninently. Maybe I want to have a pad handy to look things up while watching TV or movies. Or maybe read a FAQ while I'm playing a video game. Or maybe put it on a stand to browse recipes in the kitchen. Or read while out on the patio drinking a beer. Or change the music playing on my XMBC box using the web interface from a different room. Or (once I figure out how to do it) allow guests at parties to browse karaoke song lists and queue up songs directly from a web app instead of using binders with printed lists and having to figure out a confusing remote while swapping discs. Or adjusting the A/C or heat from a pad connected to a home automation setup. These need to be cheap, simple devices for what I want. Not $600 proprietary crap from Apple.

Thanks for bring up this point. The iPad is portable and should be perfect for non-work related traveling. Yet it sucks at that because it's very limited in storage and has no external connectivity so you have no way to transfer your photos from your camera. Another round loss to the netbook, iPad.

These will sell well regardless. I remember looking around when the first announced the thing and there were multiple message boards and whatnot with people exclaiming how they could not wait to buy one.

I think the thing looks stupid, but I am not Apple's target market, so it does not matter.

While it does have the shortcoming of not being able to transfer directly to the ipad, I was mostly joking based on your poorly-written complaint. I don't need my ipad to replace a basic SD card. And I don't want to carry all of my photos on any portable device. That's why I have flickr. I don't think your 16gb complaint holds any weight. I have never met a single person in my life who carried around all of their photos with them at all times on some sort of external enclosure. I have met lots of people who have flickr and picasa accounts. If the iPad could upload to either from an sd card that's all you'd need. If you want to show your friends your photos, you fire up a browser.

I see your point. I do upload my photos and share them on FB with my friends too, but that usually take a long time like several months for a large amount of photos coz I'll handpick the photos plus minor retouching and resize and upload. Quickest way is still just play them of a HDD.

Here's what I want one for, a huge ass touch screen remote. I was looking at the touch screen Pronto tablets from Philips and it runs roughly $1300'ish and all is does is function as a remote. The iPad will possibly make the best remote ever, hell my Touch makes a pretty sweet remote. I can only imagine how uber the iPad will be. Even if the iPad did nothing else but function as a remote, it'll still be half the price of the Pronto. And I'll have to assume with the specs, it should easily be a far better remote when configured correctly.

Going to disagree here. One of the most important features of a remote for me is being able to operate it without looking based on tactile sensations. A good remote will have nubs on it to orient your hand (like the nubs on keyboards on the home row). A pure touch-screen device will never be good enough, in my opinion.

Why don't you just carry around the SD cards and a small USB adapter and/or AV out cables? That's what I carry in my camera bag and it works well enough. That way you don't even have to put them on a computer first.

I watched the video on the apple site. They spend alot of time highlighting how easy it is to use the calendar, look at photos, etc..... looks like a waste of money to me.

Who knows if it is going to sell well though.

A Smartphone that isn't a phone for people with extreme Myopia.

"Most" people have a data plan that's around $15/mo and a 3G phone that supports tethering?! Where do you live exactly?
I said most people have 3G, I said tethering is available. I never said tethering for $15.

Most people will have a data plan less than $59, but more than $15. I can get one for $30, twice as much as the iPad but it's -much- more useful. I'd get phone+netbook internet access. Hell I could even activate it as a hotspot, if you unlock the phone, no cables, no "awkwardness", no pulling out two devices. Keep the phone where it is.

Factor in the higher initial costs of the iPad and I bet you'd have to use it for ~2.5 years to break even.

For less functionality.

I agree with first post but the one thing a netbook lacks is a little picture of an apple. The rest is immaterial; apple whores will buy it with glee, just as they buy ipod shuffles despite there being far superior alternatives, far, far, far.
