Not to mention their USB cable charger don't last for over 2 months. They start fraying on both ends. Went to the store to tell them about it and the arrogant manager told me that apple does not cover the particular item. When you get big usually the CS falls. This USB cable is a known issue.

I have had my USB charger for one year now. It's split in a couple spots but that includes wrapping and unwrapping it at least twice a day, every day and in a non-office environment.

I've never called Apple because I won't buy their garbage, but Logitech and Dell have given me great support. Logitech sent me a new mouse without asking for the old one in return. With Dell I had to deal with Indian accents, but I got new parts with a prepaid box to return the old ones within a week. With both I had to deal with retarded troubleshooting steps, but I understand the need for that to weed out the idiots.

If I had an issue, I'd bitch about it too, especially when paying the idiot tax for an Apple product.

I was asking OP about his experiences, but you basically proved my point: You got some great service, but you also had frustrating experiences.

However, you did also make an interesting statement. You called Apple products "garbage". Other than price, what are your issues with Apple products?

Dell tech support drives me apeshit. It doesn't matter what the problem is, they make you install the latest BIOS before doing an RMA. Noisy fan that's grinding? BIOS update. Bad battery that no longer charges? BIOS update. Charger that no longer works... you guessed it.

The last bozo I talked was even worse than usual, and seemed more interested in selling me an extended warranty then just sending me my damn replacement part.

Apple products are locked down. You do things their way, or fuck off. That's unacceptable for a computer I own. Apple products are pretty, but diamond encrusted handcuffs are still handcuffs.

What are you not able to do on an Apple computer that you now actually do on your computer?

Wrong.

Applecare is worth its cost. You can even get it cheaper thru B&H.

Read the reviews of people that have this plan. Bank on electronics breaking....and having this plan can save you loads of money.

To the OP.....when you get shit from ANY Customer Service rep, ask for a supervisor. If you still get crap, hang up, call again. Eventually you'll get your way if you're fair with your complaint.

So....he says to get Applecare. You say he is wrong, and then say Applecare is good? I'm confused.

And?

MotionMan

Completely change the interface to anything I want, including to one like OSX if I cared to make my machine ugly. Inspect the code of all the software I run to make sure it isn't phoning home. I control my machine 100%. There's no restrictions on how I use it.

Why are you being coy all of a sudden?

Could your attitude have something to do with your recent experience with Apple customer service? Nahhhhh.

MotionMan

What attitude? I answered your question. My motivation for creating this thread stemmed from the terrible experience I received when calling Apple customer support. Search to your heart's content. I've been here a long time.

I was calm and polite when speaking with Rebecca. My issue is that I was asked to pay additional money for a service that should be provided under the existing hardware warranty, which is valid for another 9 months.

I've found calling and dealing with any tech support to be a pain on the phone. If you're close to an Apple store, just go in and I'm sure they'll take care of you. And yes, having Applecare makes life easier. I remember when the mic on my iPhone stopped working after 1.5 years. I just walked in and they gave me new one. I was in and out within ten minutes.

And you can buy an Applecare program for > 50% off on eBay.

If you insist on dealing with phone support, ask to have your call escalated to a manager.

OP, I just wanted to give you the warning that if you do plan to go to this Apple Store close to you, make sure you make an appointment first!

Otherwise you're just going to rant again tomorrow that you had to wait for 3 hours until someone would even talk to you :D

You must be joking.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

Apple said:
General requirements (for OS X Lion)

Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory

Hackintosh anyone?

Apple forces you into a pre-selected hardware arrangement limiting your ability to custom design your own computer. This extends to when it's time to upgrade your CPU or expand your hard-drives. Also overclocking is more difficult with a mac.

Apple is the epitome of a hand-cuffed product with the upside being better reliability. However, if you ever want to stretch your legs and free yourself from the hand-cuffs the reliability of a hackintosh can plummet to lower than that of the average PC.

All that said Apple obviously has a stellar product with broad market appeal, but let's not pretend it isn't extremely restrictive as compared to other OS's.

I had the ram in my MBP die after a few months. Took it into the Apple Store, they replaced both sticks for free without hassle.
