I just bought a 17 inch G4 powerbook online. This is what I got:

1. A machine that wouldnt boot until 3 days later( Had a runtime error that "magically" disappeared...yeah right).
2. No airport card.
3. A dead pixel in the middle of the screen.

When asking if I could get this unstable system replaced, and a screen without a dead pixel in the middle(I don't mind if the dead pixel is to the side), They Said No! I paid over $3000 bucks for this peice of crap and $300 for their special "customer support" Icare program. ICare probably stands for ICare only about screwing over customers!!!

Stay away from these theifs! There POLICIES ARE NOT CUSTOMER FRIENDLY and their expensive support is utterly useless!

If you want to live through my horror, go ahead and get a laptop from these guys.

Well a "LUDDITE" is like going a little too far :) I understand and accept mishaps when I pay 800 bucks for a computer. When the price goes up in the thousands, I think we all need a little reassurance esp. when the label iCare comes into play. I've heard at least a dozen complaints about Mac and their "less than perfect" customer support...

But then again, I'm a PC kinda' guy :)

Hey... my key got stuck, what do you want?! Hehehehe... :) Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if MAC will actually cost that much... one day!

Isn't there a penalty free return policy? Just say their product sucks and you're buying a Dell instead, or make that two Dells for you what paid.

I've gotten two laptops thru Apple. Worked great and Apple's support was very helpful.

For the airport card, did you pay for it? If so I'd b!tch all to hell.

As for the stuck pixel, that's life my friend. I'm unluckly, but every x86 and Mac laptop I've ever owned had one. (Fortunately, the one on my latest TiBook is barely noticeable.)

Anyways, from what I've read, it seems Apple's support is better than average, but not perfect obviously.

First of all, spending $3000 over the internet was pretty fvcking stupid. My first car cost less than that. Who cares if it costs a couple hundred more at CompUSA or direct from apple? It's better than buying the iCare sh!t. But, macs that I have owned are great systems. Actually, I'm still using an older PowerPC (one of the very first towers) for some stuff. So don't hate on apple, hate on the store you bought it from. But you could have bought 3 compaq laptops for that money...

if you used a credit card just contest the charge and tell them about your sad story about dead pixel and poor customer support.
CC companies are usually more customer frieindly

And if the damage is not bad enough for them to accept a return try a strong magnet over the hard drive or the lcd.:D

well, direct form apple is over the internet... why is it so stupid? If you have a decent credit card you should be fine. and what's wrong w/ icare? laptops are prone to break down... regardless of brand. I've seen dells/compaqs/apples all crap over (my ibook, a refurb.. went thru hell.. battery died.. then lcd, and the cdrw right after the lcd). I've learned the 3yr warranty is a good deal for these things. it's just a matter of how the company handles it.

and yes, he could have bought like 3 compaqs, but they wouldn't be 17" widescreen powerbooks.. thin and pretty :p

I don't think you have to tell anybody not to get a MAC. They are now like...5% of the market if that.

I also know that it is hard for any computer manufacturer to make a LCD without a dead pixel. But after paying 3,000 you expect everything in perfect condition. IMO, I wouldn't spend 3,000 on any computer.

Well if it "magically" disappeared then where do you think the problem was? I suspect it was between the chair and keyboard but that's just me
2. No airport card.
You didn't investigate this when you purchased? Or it was supposed to and they didn't package it or something?
3. A dead pixel in the middle of the screen.
No biggy most OEMs incl. Dell, Compaq, IBM, etc... require like 6 to 10 dead pixels for a replacement.

I purchased a 2.53ghz media center PC from HP back in December. They replaced that computer at no charge with an upgraded 3.06ghz media center PC. It had an issue with a DVD burner so they have replaced it with an even better 3.06 Pavilion with nice specs. All of this at no charge/no shipping charges. A 2.53 ghz, (400 fsb?) 512mb pc2100, 120gb harddrive, g4 mx420 HP has turned into a 3.06, 1gb of pc3200 (800 fsb), 250 gb harddrive, radeon 9800 non-pro at no charge. HP has the best customer service.

3.06 at 800FSB? 3.06 are 533 FSB.....this just seems crazy...you must of been a valued customer....

Edit: I am still shocked about this...are you sure this happened :).....its like them buying you a new PC ...I was happy because radio shack gave me a $25 gift certificate when my cheap $10 pack of CD's all were frizbee's...but this is something else

and I am a PC user...never much of a fan of apple....liked Linux even better

Just to answer some questions:

1. I would return it, but since I've had it for more than 10 days(14 days) they don't accept returns!!!! Also they want to charge me $300 to return it. I'll ask my credit card company what I can do though. Good idea.

2. I don't think the computer wouldn't start up because of me. Unless pressing the power button to turn it on is a user error haha. It would have a mac-boot screen with a run-time error, then load with a picture of a file with a question mark on the screen(what a great OS). This error disappearing randomly has me really disturbed because I need a stable system for work! Replace the damn laptop Apple!

3. Of course it was supposed to come with an airport card, why else would I complain about not getting one!

4. I wouldn't care if the dead pixel was to the side, but this guy is right there staring at me in the middle!

5. Please no more stupid comments(ex: 2 and 3 by users who will remain nameless =P)

On a side note, I was pro Apple until this occurance. My family has bought their products since they started out. Probably averaging a few thousand dollars a year for their products! Their reluctance to help me out really dissapoints me and shows they have no customer loyalty. Why don't they want to replace 1 laptop out of the millions they sell? My family has given apple a small countries budget worth of business!

Thanks for any input you guys have. I know Apples are usually good products so I'm not hating on them. I'm just saying that I am never buying from these cheap-ass theifs again =P. $3000 = a world of trouble for the customer? Come on, Apple, wake up!

It happens with all companies. My friend got a Dell laptop with a Celeron, when he ordered a P4.

Personally, I'd just send in the machine for repair. Apple has been known to replace parts for less problems than what you've experienced. And ask for them to put in the Airport card at the same time.

As for the dead pixel, that's just tough luck unfortunately.

JASANITY...

Sorry to hear about your experience.

Apple is known for their over-priced - under-powered products, but now low-quality?

tsk..tsk..tsk...

just to make sure, airport ready != it has an airport card. I've seen that mistake a few times around.

did you buy it direct from apple? i'm surprised, I had very good support while dealing w/ my ibook probs
