Yep, there's definitely a class issue with a lot of the Apple trolling, you fly first class and see about a 90% mix of Apple VS Android, go back to coach, and the mix is much lower.

The smugness of a lot of Android fans is a hundred times worse than even the more hardcore of Apple fans -- same goes for some PC gamers. It's very immature, in poor taste and is akin to console fanboyism.

I actually find Linux and Apple fans to be the most reasonable when discussing different hardware/software vendors.

There's still a percentage of loons for every OS, most folks that have iPhones couldn't give a damn, they just buy and use the damn things :)

You know, I've never seen Apple Stores or the Genius Bar as pretentious. It's mainly because Apple's products are still generally accessible (especially now that the iPhone SE is out), and the very point of the Genius Bar is to ask all kinds of questions, even the basic "how do I do this?" variety.

Apple does put on airs at times, especially for higher-end devices, but it's not the same as, say, Rolex or Mercedes.

To be more clear, just the name is pretentious. I mean, I don't have a better one, but that's not my job.

Andy Warhol said:
What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.

The experience in busy Apple Stores has gotten progressively worse. It's a chaotic mess. I tend to avoid the Apple Store if I can, unless I need warranty work. And yeah, the name "Genius Bar" is a bit pretentious but even worse IMO is it just sounds stupid.

iOS and iTunes and Music are also losing its usability advantage, with the strange UI choices they've made recently. And they bought a company with overpriced products from a guy who beat women. WTF.

That said, overall I like the hardware and software better and I think the warranty support is better than average. I just wish Android and the Android phone manufacturers would get their shit together and build better, more consistent, and more integrated product lines. Then I'd have more viable choices to switch away from iOS from time to time.

You're right - anecdotal, of course, but most conversations I have with android zealots are of the "your choice is stupid, my choice is the only choice" variety. While I feel that way myself about OSX (windows is kinda a joke), from my experience most iPhone users are kinda indifferent to what phone you use, meaning there's no judgement when someone pulls out a Galaxy. At least I"m that way - after years on IOS I'm back on Android because choice is a very good thing (and the samsung / apple competition just leads to better products and more innovation - what's wrong with that?)

I don't run into Android super fans in meatspace, only on the internet.

I'll try to use Android, then realize I really appreciate being able to consistently and reliably answer the phone on my iPad or laptop, I don't like that the garden is walled, but it is a pretty garden.

All that being said, I am getting tired of upgrading so frequently, wouldn't have upgraded to the current "s" models if they hadn't added the newer TMobile bands, I think my future upgrades will be to replace broken equipment for a few years...

I've had good experiences with the Apple Store and Genius Bar (2 free mobo replacements for my 2011 MBP that has the dGPU issues.... I've permanently disabled the dGPU now to keep it from happening again) but I'm always put off by how self-consciously hipster-y the employees all are. There wasn't a single dude in there without a cabbie cap, giant beard, rumpled beanie, skinny jeans + Converse, gauge piercings, or some other kind of "hey look at me I'm so cool" attention-getter. Just going in there feels like I'm walking into one of Portlandia's more dystopian sketches. Apple, is it so much to ask that you have some actual nerds working at your technology store?

This is not a recording...

I bought a wireless Apple keyboard at a garage sale on Saturday. When I got it home, I realized I could not for the life of me get the battery compartment to unscrew - it was really stuck. I hopped on apple.com and saw that they had genius appointments available on Sunday evening, so I grabbed one at 5:30 p.m.

Yesterday, I got to the store, explained to my Genius exactly what happened (always be honest with them), he took it in the back and confirmed that it would not unscrew and, poof, I had a replacement keyboard less than 5 minutes into my appointment.

I am starting to feel a little guilty.
