Apple should be fined for still using proprietary port

Hmmm so they do exist, but it's not part of the phone and you have to buy it separately? Kinda fail but good to know it's out there.

Efficiency is not that important as if you put it on the nightstand and leave the phone there overnight it should be fully charged by morning I would imagine, while keeping the phone easily available to reach over at when tired if you get a call or something.

so, get a longer cable? Duracell wants 50 bux for some stupid coil built into an iphone 5 case... and probablt doesn't work too well either because of the metal casing on the iphone 5.

Thats what I do now, but the whole idea is being able to quickly grab it without fiddling with a plug. Not a HUGE deal, was just saying it would be nice. But it sounds like they ask an arm and a leg for it, so not worth it. I just charge my phone at my computer anyway. I'd have to get another cable though, would be nice to keep one at work.

Proprietary everything is the main reason I don't use any Apple products.

Looking at my Apple laptop, none of the connectors are proprietary except the magnetic power connector. Ethernet, Displayport, USB, Firewire 800, 3.5mm audio, SD Card, SATA... wow, it's a wonder that I can find anything that can plug into it! :whiste:

imagnine if Apple tried to make a proprietary ethernet cable back in the day, IF they had that pull, back in the day, which luckily they didnt. But they would have if they could.

It's what they are trying to do now and marketing to all these dumbasses the benefits of their "lightning" cable... right, catchy name, it must be good.

i dont think you can get all those docking controls to work over a standard micro USB

thats pretty much the only benefit to apples connector

Audio out also sounds infinity better than when using a 1/8th inch RCA cable. I'll take Apple's cable over anything else just for that fact alone. I hook my HTC One to my car head unit using an RCA cable, it sounds decent enough. I hook my iPhone to my head unit using a 30 pin connector it sounds noticeably better. And as far as I know, the HTC One's suppose to have a better than average headphone jack out.

Proprietary is annoying but the lighting connector is better designed than *usb. Solid connection and no fiddling with orientation. The old dock connector was worse than USB though--big AND clumsy.

Yup, we no longer own any Apple products except for an old 4.5G iPod which i use in my car. I have essentially spoken with my wallet (Hear me, Apple!)

What I'd like to see is induction based charging as an extra way to charge it (don't replace the plugin port). Place the phone on a surface that has a coil and it charges through induction. I guess it's hard to make something like this without it interfering with the electronics such as the antenna. I've actually heard of it being worked on and I could have sworn the Nexus 4 was suppose to have it, but I have yet to see such tech available to public and my Nexus 4 has nothing like this.

Palm Pre had the Touchstone charger.

HP TouchPad has it too.

Actually I'm surprised they have not tried to patent ethernet, or wifi. I could see them do that.

Seriously, you've got to "fiddle" with a USB port to plug it in?, the sides are beveled so one can easily see which way it's orientated, seems kinda fool-proof to me..

Having micro USB guarantees you have to look at the end of the cable or the device (or both). 50% of the time, you will need to flip it 180° -- that's the "fiddling" he's talking about. To deny that is delusional.

Fighting trying to plug in a USB cable in the back of a PC where you can't see the ports can drive a person to want to murder someone. USB's not a simple connector. MicroUSB's even worse maybe because the ports on devices aren't all mounted the same way. To me it would be logical to have the longer part of the micro USB cable towards the top end of the device, but this apparently isn't how some companies thing though.

I don't own Apple products, but it's hard to deny the attention to detail in something as seemingly mundane as a charger cable.
