Apple Puts Authentication Chip In Lightning Cable Ensures No Cheap Third-Party Option

Either way, my point was, not only are they a pain to connect, but i had to purchase decent cords and each device varies between those forcing me to sometimes hunt for the right one, The Apple devices.ipod/ipad came with an acceptable cord to do what i needed and is far easier to connect...plus its the same connector for either device.

Now if all small usb devices simply used one or the other instead of having mini's and micro's, then it wouldn't be nothing. Instead i have to physically check the ends to see if its the one for my camera or whatever and i often mistake one for the other...just comes down to the annoyance factor between them

This doesn't make a lot of sense. You seem to be making two groups, one that uses the new apple connector and one that contains every other device that uses a different connector.

It was a combined USB and headphone jack and I hated it. Mainly because you couldn't use a decent set of headphones without an adaptor.
Which is odd because my Droid Eris had a headphone jack as well. But I remember some of their phones didn't (Magic aka MyTouch).

The Touch3G in front of me doesn't. Nice little phone though. Has a metal band all the way round that looks scarily like the iPhone4's.

I was checking my e-mail, and I saw that Saveology is offering two Lightning cables for $12:

https://www.saveology.com/deals/national/iphone5-usb-cable

Since there are no third party cables, I'm guessing that these are Apple brand cables? I can't find anything that states it though. However, their price is wrong in that two Lightning cables from Apple only costs $38 ($19 each).
Those are probably third-party cables that will never be delivered (cancelled like the Amazon orders).

I hope they can get the price down quickly.

Official Lightning Cable: $19.00 everywhere (local and online)
"Cloned" Lightning Cable: $19.90 + $7 shipping

😵

If there's only one clone maker, they're going to charge as much as they can because there's no competitive pressure. It probably costs them pennies on the dollar to make, so why not make a boatload of money while they still can?

The ProClip iPhone 5 holder only provides a pass-through for the self-provided cable to sit:

They previously had versions for iPhones that had a 30-pin connector built-in (this is what I have now):

There is no indication that a built-in option for the iPhone 5 is coming.

Actually, never mind... at least Microsoft's bar business tactics fucked other companies and not so much consumers. You can't fuck both.

Hmm, the lightning port is strong enough to hold up the iPhone 5?

The lightning port/cable is pretty strong. The port is a hollow hole, with the contact points in the outside. The cable itself is a small solid piece of metal.

This seems to be such a non-issue for people who actually own new iPhones and a huge issue for people who don't own and don't plan on buying one.

Edit: Generally speaking, of course. Every data set has outliers.

What about for the people who always defend Apple no matter what stupid decisions they make?

I'm shocked, shocked at all the Apple hate here. Fact is, Apple is a company. THey are as luxury as you're going to get in the electronics space. If you don't like their product and want to go gutter cheap, buy a plastic Samdung toy.

Get off your high horse, the world has decided that proprietary connectors are bad. Any company who promotes such garbage deserves some hate.

As to your Samsung hate, at least my phone doesn't shatter when I drop it.

Nor does my iPhone 4, so I do not get your point.

This is an aside, but I was thinking about it a couple of days ago.

I am really sick of all these "drop tests" done when a phone comes out. There's so much variation in the drops, even with the same person doing them at one time.

I think the whole process needs to be rethought. There needs to be a machine with a settable psi to hit the device in certain spots (the front, the sides, the back) to see just how much force can be withstood before a breaking point is reached.

I had an iPhone 4 nearly two years before my back glass cracked. But some people (no one I KNOW though) claims it breaks for them at the drop of a hat. That seems less like a scientific conclusion and more a case of just bad luck.

A stupid decision is a stupid decision.. and should be called as such.

There's no point in even arguing about this. You THINK it's a stupid decision. It's your opinion. Honestly, I don't have a problem with it.

Neither of our opinions are likely to change.
