The technology, which has not been commercialized, would let a phone's administrator block an iPhone from sending or receiving texts with certain words.

Messages containing blocked material either would not be received or would have the objectionable content redacted. Unlike other text blockers, Apple's version would also be able to filter content based on a child's grade level and claims to filter abbreviated words that maybe missed by other programs.

The patent, awarded Tuesday, does not address the sending or receiving of explicit images.

So, pointless? Not sure how 'patent-able' this is either. But, I have my own 'anti-sexting' technology. Its called 'Don't buy your kids smart phones.' A single paygo phone, without a camera, is all they need.

You know, as a kid and as a young adult (not that I'm old right now) I used to hate when companies announce technology or techniques like this to censor certain content. Now that I have a kid, with another on the way, I actually approve of these types of things. Funny how that works.

hehe.. same boat here.. except that do we really need another patent on something like this?

my kids caterpillar spelling toy blocks out when you try to spell 'bad' words (the mrs. found that out... intentionally). isn't that some sort of prior art?

Potentially. Depends on the claims and whether your toy was publically available before the filing date of the patent in question.

This. I'm not sure why anybody below college age needs a cell phone. Parents argue its for safety, but it seems more like an electronic leash to me. No wonder the kids abuse them.
